So I'm pretty sure the bearings on the alternator are going bad. They howl when its cold and you can feel a failed bearing problem and the slight seizing messes with the RPM's a little. Once it spins for a while, the howling stops and it idles fine. It's not the belt (tried the dressing), it's not anything else (already looked).

I called the stealership, they have two sizes, the 160 and the 134 amp. My truck is equiped with the smaller one. I, ofcourse, want to upgrade to the larger one. Is it a direct replacement if I do this?

I don't know of anyone who has actually done the swap from the smaller to larger one, but I do know the larger one is more expensive than the smaller one. The 136amp version retails for 317.00, HTC pricing is 228.00. The 160 amp version retails for 430.00, HTC pricing is 309.00. In theory you can probably bolt the larger one in, just not sure if the extra amperage is worth the additional $$.

The whole time we were fixing my truck I had a whine in my engine, I was sure it was a dried up alternator bearing. We two days after I started driving the bearing caming out on the way home. I parked it, went and bought an alternator, went to install it, and it was actually the idler pully right below the alternator not the alternator. Got the pulley for 21 bucks at advance auto.

The alternator was 180 after a 55 dollar core charge. When I returned the alternator they'd already sent my core charge away so I made 55 bucks on some junk alternator sitting in my garage. Big Grin

Funny you mention that, the pulley was lose and I retightened it.

Funnier now, I sprayed a bunch of degreaser and hosed down the engine bay and blew some air at stuff to dry it off. Didn't make the noise this morning.

I went to the dealer, special order, and the prices were just like Henson here posted...so I looked at the 09's instead Big Grin no 4x4's at the lot Frowner

I'm holding off until I know for sure its the alternator. When I spun it by hand it felt fine. I'm not so sure its the alt any more and being that its a few hundred bucks, I don't want to act in a rush.

The bearing going out of the idler pulley made more noise than you could imagine.

Was it intermitent though? Did it make it some days but not others?

The day it started, it seemed to be constant! Then the next day, a little less but still there. Then only in the mornings after it cooled off over night. Now I can't get it to do it anymore.

This truck has a bad habit of doing that. If you do a search you can find a few posts from people with gas tank problems; try to fill up and the pump acts like you are topped off. I started researching how to drop the tank and fix the problem...and it just went away one day and never came back. hello

Spoke too soon. I've been driving some of the other cars I have for a few weeks. Took the truck out this Saturday and the noise came back. After a few minutes and it warmed up, the noise went away. It's pissing me off not being able to pin point it!

Wouldn't it change tone if I steered one way or the other while it was making the noise?

Welp, turned out it was the alternator after all. The sound was getting away from the howl and sounding more like a clicking rattle. So I took the belt off and this time the spinning of the pulley was labored. Forcefully tried to move the pulley and I could tell the rear bearings had play. Rather than find a shop to do the work, I went and picked up a new unit. No one had a beefier one as far as amperage (I have the 136), but whatever, I'm thinking of trading on a newer Ram anyway.

Thanks for everyone's input. I also changed the belt since it was probably due (~75K on the odo)
