I saw HEMIvore's post on the gas price discussion, and it reminded me about how much it used to cost to fill-up.

So, if you want, post how much it cost to fill up your tank when you were 16.

For me, my first vehicle was a '96 Ram 1500 4x4 360 I bought from my Dad. It had a 34-gallon tank and cost a little more than $40 to fill-up. This was only 6 years ago. My friends who drove S10's and Cavaliers could buy enough gas to drive all night for $5-10.

Now my 34-gallon tank costs $120 to fill up!

I was driving at 14, gas was 12/14c a gallon. Never brought gas by the tank, never had that much money then. Remember pushing my brothers ford(49) into gas stations to get gas. We would pool our money to get gas.

The first time I filled up was at my Uncle Fred Tolls general merchandise and Grocery Store in Tollville, AR (he had some great hamburgers too). It was a hand operated pump. You pumped the amount of gas you wanted into a clear glass cylinder on the top, then you put the nozzle in and the fuel dumped out into your tank. It was 12 cents per gallon. Oh man, the good ol days. Dad got the gas for 9 cents a gallon for farm use only.

Uncle Freds is where all the farmers hung out during winter to play checkers and dominoes and blow stories. I love to go there and listen to all the guys stories. Hamgburgers were 15 cents, coca cola was 5 cents, and you could buy blue jeans there for $2.50.

Well, seeing as how I was the inspiration for this, I might as well add to it...

I drove a '66 Chevy Pick Up Step Side, Short Bed with a 327, 3 on the tree, and 4:11 rear end I think... I loved that truck except I could only go friggin' 75 @ 4000 RPMS in the damn thing... 10 in 1st, 30 in 2nd... GAS HOG!

Gas was $0.80 at 16 (12 years ago) at it's cheapest, so it was pretty cheap to fill up on a Subway salary... Big Grin
