I was towing a dual axle trailer yesterday full of wood. The bed was empty, hoping to keep the majority of weight on the trailer. The truck was squatting a little, but I wasn't overly concerned. Shortly after starting, I heard the tones. The ABS light as well as the brake light in the dash came on. This has happened before when hauling a heavier load. I don't believe I'm exceeding the recommended weight, but I also don't understand why it has heppened a few times now. Anyone experiencing this?

Did you have surge brakes or electric brakes on the trailer? If you had electric, do you have a trailer brake controller in your truck? If you had no trailer brakes or no trailer brake controller for electric brakes you probably grossly over-worked your brakes on your truck and that would be giving you problems.

The only time the lights come on is when I hit a bump in the road and it automatically comes on. I've even had it happen when I was hauling a small load in the back of the truck with no trailer. I hit a bump, the truck absorbed it, and the lights came on again. The lights have never come on as a result of using the brakes. It's always when I hit a bump in the road and if you know PA, they are everywhere. I don't get it.

sounds like wires to the abs sensor on the rear axle housing or the actual sensor is going out, Id say to replace the sensor for sure, its pretty cheap to replace and thats what it sounds like to me!

Your warranty should cover this. Why don't you just bring it in to the dealer. If you do you should probably have a load in the bed so they can see it happen.

I will admit that I have extreemly overloaded my truck, with and without a trailer, and I have never had any lights come on. I agree you have some wires rubbing through or something else going on.

Check your brake fluid level on the brake booster. I know this sounds like some silly advice but this actually happened to me once. It was on a Toyota T-100 4x4 but the same problem. I was towing a heavily loaded trailer with some decent drop in the rear due to the weight. The ABS and brake light came on. And did several times. I took it to the dealership and come to find out there is a sensor in the brake reservoir and it was just a hair low, and enough that when loaded down in the rear it shifted just enough to trip the light on. Its worth a shot.

iagree I had a similar problem in a previous vehicle. It turns out, my fluid was low in the system causing my brake light to flash when I would hit bumps.
