Hello All,

I have a 2006 Quad Cab TRX4 1500 truck with the Hemi and 3.92 rear gears. Dodge states I can tow up to 7500 pounds. I have since installed a 1 to 2 Flowmaster muffler, Superchips Towing Upgrade, Front end leveling kit and Cold Air Intake.

My 29' travel trailer weighs approx. 6700 pounds dry. I towed it home Saturday and the Hemi performed fine. In the hilly country I had some, what I thought, were uneccessary tranny shifts. Tow/Haul Mode seemed to help solve these issues.

I had thought about putting a Tranny Temp guage in to keep an eye on that. Has anyone installed one of these? Is it an easy install or a difficult one?

Any other suggestions on upgrades for better fuel economy and towing performance? You overall thoughts on my setup?

Flush the transmission and install Amsoil ATF fluid. I am still waiting to determine the best method for connecting my trans temp gauge (installed but not wired). I was going with the PML transmission pan but the cross-over exhaust runs directly under the stock transmission pan.

Phil, I have done the same as you. I have the guage installed, but have yet to install the wiring or the temp sending unit. There IS a spot on the tranny that is a test port that can be used, or might be able to be used for this. get yourself some airbags installed, sway bar and/or stabilizer bar. life will be much eaiser. enjoy!

1. In my experience with travel trailers, I have found that the published dry weights are notoriously low. They do not include options such as AC, full propane tanks, batteries etc etc etc. If that is where you are getting the 6700 number from then chances are that you are closer to 7500 lbs dry.
2. You need to take into account your vehicle's GVWR and the TT's tongue weight. The tongue weight has to be added to your payload.
3. What is the gross combined weight rating of your vehicle? This is another figure you need to consider.

Can you post those pics? Also, what is your normal operating temp showing on the gauge?

Hello All,

I tow a 28' fifth wheel that weighs about 6500#. I have installed a Tranny temp and oil temp gauge. The tranny temp was the easiest of the two. I installed mine in the pan. (doesn't read exactly the temp, about 30 degrees off) This was my reasoning, I wanted the true trans oil temp not the temp of the case. I used a steel bung (autometer) with the 1/8" sender (electric). While I was at it I changed the trans filter and flushed the system. Things you will need:

12 Qts ATF +4 Transmission Fluid
1 Tube of transmission silicone (black)
1 1/8" Electric Sender
1 1/8" Steel bung

This install took me about an hour and a half. I you guys would like me to write up the steps please let me know.

I was wondering about the exhaust running under the tranny pan. Do you think it would noticably increase the fluid temperature and do you think wrapping this part of the exhaust pipe would make a difference?

It certainly not going to help the heat but unless it has direct contact I don't think it will have a huge effect.

This would be good to have in the Installation thread for folks who may want to flush the ATF for synthetic.

hicap,

I have a 27' Prowler (ultralite) with one large slide. It weighs about 6500# dry but it wouldn't suprise me if it weighed 7500# or more loaded. The hitch weight is about 1100#. It isn't a super high front so wind resistance isn't as great. I did find that is heavy winds the truck really felt it. Other than that the hemi pulls it very well. I do recommend the Firestone air bags in the reat, they make all the diffence in the world pulling a 5th wheel.

I have an '06 1500 Hemi quad cab 4X4. I tow a 29' Cougar fifth wheel. I have towed these for some years with 1500's. I have also always installed the air bags in the rear which I think is WELL WORTH IT. But i have never touched the tranny's, (temp gages, change to synthetic, etc.) Is this necessary?

RamVett,

I have both a trans and oil temp guage installed. It does help with info while towing. I would change the trans oil with synthetic because it does cool it down.
