I think I may have a leaky rear seal on my differential. I had it on alift getting an exhaust hanger repaired and saw some 'crud' on the bottom of the differential. I had driven through water, but this 'crud' had an oily feel to it.

My question is, is this something that I, a novice mechanic, can replace, or should I take it to the deal, and hopefully have it done right. Also, the differential cover has a 'wet' look to the bottom one third of it. Is this due to the differential gasket/rtv wearing out?

My truck is a 2003 with 53.5k miles and has never had any rearend work to my knowledge.

Are you talking about leaking out of the rear cover or out of the pinion flange where the driveshaft connects to the differential.

It looks like it could be both. Talked to my dad, was his truck. He said the pinion seal was replaced, so I may just be looking at 'old' grease on the differential. I am going to degrease it and keep and eye on it to verify.

they seem to always leak on the stock danas no matter how many new seals it has in it. It looks worse than it actually is, but it makes a mess, do you have any on the gas tank and under the bed?? is so than that would be the pinion seal leaking, just keep the level correct.

It was the rear pinion seal. I only paid the deductable from my 7/70 warranty.
