This is my first post. I have a 2008 1500 4x4 mega cab. I am very happy with the power but would like a little better fuel economy(Iknow so does everyone). Right now ,driving it normal I get between 12 and 14.5 calculated not with the overhead. I have been looking at chips and programmers and am geting a wide variety of conflicting opinions on which is the best for fuel ecomomy. Also I have the lifetime bumber to bumper service plan. will putting a chip in or a programmer on void my waranty?

First off, Welcome to the club!

As far as better mileage, you're probably not going to find anything that will give you a significant boost, but there are things that help. Cold air intake, synthetic oil, (AMSoil or Royal Purple seem to be best) and yes a programmer can help.

I never had any problems with my warranty while having a programmer, but it is best to be safe and de-program the truck anytime you take it in to the dealer.

I have a 2007 4x4 1500 Mega Cab. I too average about the same fuel mileage. But, I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the "Edge Gas Evolution"?

Take a look at the Superchips Mileage XS tuner. I don't know anything about it, but it is an option.

Welcome to the HTC! Like the rest of the guys have said, a programmer is a good place to start, along with a CAI, headers, and exhaust. The MegaCabs usually experience over 35% drivetrain loss, so if you're getting that kind of mpg now, you're doing pretty well.

Chipped, air in, air out. I run 15 consistently.
Once ran with the tailgate down and got it up to 17 for a tank.

What Phil said. Wink

Seriously, drivetrain loss in the MegaCabs is around 35-38%, so your mpg is going to suffer as a result. If you're serious about increasing the fuel economy of your truck, here's a short list of mods: Superchips, BFI intake, cat-back exhaust, AMSOIL, e-fan, tonneau cover, Fitch Fuel Catalyst, low rolling-resistance tires, and a front swap to manual locking hubs (on 4wd only). Oh yeah, and a light right foot... Big Grin

3.55 will save on the highway but will really kill you around town, you better of going with lower gears on that size truck

I've got 3.55s and 31" tires and the best I have ever seen hand calculated is 16.7 all highway from San Marcos to Dallas and back on a single tank of gas. I mostly get about 14-15 now and usually got about 16.2 before the header swap.

With headers you really do lose some low end. If you're going for MPG I wouldn't do headers. They make killer power above 3500 but not that great for cruising. Plus they cost a lot. $1000 in gas will get you a long way compared to 1000 on mods that might get you 2mpg more at best.

shorty or mid headers might help your mpgs in a mega but longtubes probably wouldn't. i have 3.55s in my rc sb and have got around 435 miles to a 26 gallon tank on a trip to south texas. 3.55s suck though, i would much rather have 3.92s or 4.10s and take a hit in the mpg dept and gain acceleration. i would try a programmer. I have used the mileage xs program and had mixed results, the first few times i used it i actually lost mpgs, now i'm using it again and gaining mpgs again. a programmer is worth it to me, changes how it shifts and optimizes your engine
