I was thinking that i wanted 4.56's, but proudhemi brings up an interesting point that (especially if i put a 268 in) i might be shifting into 4th on the 1/4. Any thoughts on this? 3.92's aren't bad, but I saw a 4.56 burnout the other day and Eeker . Thanks guys, Kenson

If you plan on going to the track a lot then 4.10's are really best. But if you do a lot of street driving then the 4.56 are definetly more fun. But there is no question you will run out of gear when going down the 1/4, but there's a trick on not going into 4th but you will also need to be able to raise your rev limiter to do this.

well i have the 03 so my rev limit is 6300, i just can't adjust my shift points so even with overdrive off it goes into 4th i'm pretty sure at 5800... now i'll have to check.
I just wonder if when i get it down to low 13's, were i want it, if i'll be running into 4th with anything steeper than 3.92

the normal shift into 4th under wot has nothing to do with the rev limit, it always occurs around 54-5600 rpms.

4.56's work fine with my 26" tall tires at the track, 103mph is about my max with the 6600 rpm rev limit. as long as you pull the gear selector into 2nd while in 3rd gear above 5000 rpms, before it kicks into 4th, than you can stay in 3rd til the rev limit.

proudhemi is a 4.56 gear hater hello

Yes, I have to do what dline just mentioned when going down the 1/4.

Shift Manually
when taking off gear selector is in 1
when getting close to rev limit, shift gear selector to 2
when getting close to rev limit, shift gear selector to 3
when I pass 5300 rpms in 3rd gear, I drop the gear selector back into 2 and this allows me to stay in 3rd and not hit 4th gear. And then put it back into D when I cross the traps.

ok, so i'm assuming that dline isn't having any problems going into 4th, thing that sucks is that my rev limit is 6300, i need to figure out better tuning.
4.56's and smaller tires would be great, but i have a feeling if i do to much more, like a bigger cam or stahl, i'm toast and into 4th. dunno

I wouldn't even run 4.88's with my 35's! Eeker

Stick with the 4.56's or 4.10's.

As you get faster you'll find 4.56's are to low and you'll either put 4.10's in or back to your 3.92's. I personally love my 4.10's and picked up nearly 3/10ths and 6MPH on the 1/4 when I switched to them over my 4.56's.

Going quicker, and faster, with a lower numerical gear set, violates the laws of physics, and mechanical advantage. There would HAVE to be other factor involved for that to happen. ie, wheel spin, ECU not able to keep up with the rate of RPM increase,(tune), knock sensors etc. The perfect gear ratio in any race vehicle, would be to go through the traps at peak RPM, in HIGH gear. Whether it's 3, 4, 5, or 6 speed. High gear!!! With our OD ratios, it would take a gear around a 6:70. What is needed, is a trans that is dependable shifting into fourth/fifth. professor

so what do u suggest?

'04 Ram Black RC/SB 4X4. I love this truck!!! I got it Sept. 5, 2007. I wanted one for the past three years and I got it (thanks to my girlfriend). I plan on getting performance parts that include the ramhammer intake, aero-turbine exhaust, programmer, and 4.56 gears just to name a few things.

question is..what gears do you have now? are you plannin to cam up th 268 like you say in the first post? headers? efan? if so, I wouldn't go higher then 4.10's, you will be building enough hp/tq to not need the gear advantage...

Jay, i'm pretty sure that is what they are saying about the 4.10s vs 4.56s. They do NOT want to go into 4th gear(tranny go boom) or be above say 6300rpms (engine go boom) running through the traps... so 4.10s become the "safer" thing to do. I agree though... if our 4th gear was reliable, than stepping up to the 4.88s would be ideal for drag racing, pending all other systems could work together. the downside is that truck would loose its street ability.
