I just got back to Atlanta via Airtran from Kansas City, MO friday and noticed a loud metal clanking noise when shifting park to reverse. Neutral to drive. Neutral to reverse. Also anytime i accelerated from a stop or anytime i applied the acelerator at all. Sounded like somwthing was spinning and finally catching up and grabbing. I got home, I chocked the tires, put the emergency brake on, put shifter in neutral, called the wife to change shift while i was under truck. The front driveshaft would spin almost a 1/4 turn.
, suddenly stop with a loud metal clank. It would do this going from neutral to reverse or neutral to drive everytime. It was hard to tell but sounded like the clank was coming from the differencal end of the drivshaft. Any ideas as to what might be causing this loose play? it is a 4x4, AWD and the problem is in the front driveshaft/diff area.

Just wanted to let everyone know the out come of my problem.
I took yesterday and today off to work on my truck. I thought before i pull the cover on the front diff i would look harder at the front u-joint. because it sounds like a u-joint.Well thank God it was the front u-joint...one cup totally worn out...no bearings left. No looseness, had to remove the drive shaft to get it out of bind. Ithe 1/4 turn of the drive shaft is normal??? i went ahead and bought the other two u-joints for the rear shaft. I'm from the old school and like grease fittings, but let the parts man talk me into the maintence free joints Eeker. The last ones from the factory lasted 120,000 miles. What do y'all perfer as far as the type of u-joints-with or with out grease fittings?
Also the 1/4 turn before stopping was most likely the freeplay allowed by the worn out bearing cap.
