"Alex" Truck of the Month February 2007 ![]() |
Here's a question for you lifted Hemi riders. I like to quad ride in my limited spare time. I have a Yamaha YFZ-SE R that I like to haul around in the bed of the truck. I have a ramp to load it, but since I do have somewhat of a lift, I don't ride it onto the bed, I usually have a buddy or two help me lift it onto the bed.
Here's the thing...since I'm in LA, there aren't many places to go riding and I usually have to haul the quad minimum 30 miles to go riding. I don't always like to ride alone, but I would like the ability to do so. However, loading and unloading the quad is kind of hard to do on my own. Have any of you guys come up with ingenious ideas to help, other than a longer ramp? I figured if I could fab something up with a remote winch and just winch it on, that would be cool. Also, I figured if I just keep using the ramp, and come up with some form of fail safe so if the quad stalls or tries to flip back, I'm at least safe. 2004 Bright White Quad Cab SLT AIRAID Intake Gibson Split Rear Exhaust Superchiped 5% Tint all around Rough Country 3" kit (2wd) 305-65-17 BFG's on Cruiser Wheels Some Audio Mods Lots of Polish and Pimp Juice - - - |

so just how HIGH are you?
i used to ride my quad up in the bed all the time stock height 3/4 ton 4x4. (quad had manual tranny). i went cheap with a couple of wooden ramps and homemade metal pieces to hook on the tailgate. never heard of your quad (been a few years since i rode) but just looked it up, since my next obvious solution would be to add a winch to the front and a hook in the bed, but since your a sport bike that wont work. so it all boils back to just how high are you? i also used to ride my VW sandrail up one set of ramps to the bed of a flatbed then up another set up ramps to put the front tires on the roof of said truck. sorry no pictures, have them just not on PC. so with that said, i would just ride the sucker up in the truck that is EASY, it's the backing back down might scare ya? sorry that's all I got. ____________________________________________ tribuo nos pacis in terra "WE LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE, ONLY BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE" SMOKE DETECTORS SAVE LIVES. Getting it off is not a problem. I just grab the rear bar, lower it down (its pretty light, I figure I'm lifting somewhere around 150 lbs when I lower it) then just yank on the bar, pull the quad back and let the front wheels drop and hop.
The truck isn't even that high, its a 2wd lifted 2 inches in the back and rollin ~33.4 inch rubber. The ramp just sits a little steep and freaks me out. I haven't tried riding it onto the truck yet (I'm a pussy). 2004 Bright White Quad Cab SLT AIRAID Intake Gibson Split Rear Exhaust Superchiped 5% Tint all around Rough Country 3" kit (2wd) 305-65-17 BFG's on Cruiser Wheels Some Audio Mods Lots of Polish and Pimp Juice - - - |

stop being a woosie... and rodeo up... be sure that the ramps are locked to the bed, and that the brakes work.
loading and unloading are the easiest riding we do all day... we do technical off camber stuff... like river beds, and rock quarries. We ride once or twice a month, and a buddy of mine has a 6" lifted f250 w/37s. his 6' ramps work just fine.. but we ride big bore 800 sportsmans, and canams (4x4 autos) ____________________________________________________________________________ 06'-Ram-Hemi-Pearl Black-Magnaflow-AEM CAI-Diablo CMR Tuned By Mike W. @ tuningsuperstore.com 06'-Magnum R/T-Hemi-Pearl Black-Magnaflow-Diablo Tuned Ram in Action Only 2 defining forces have ever offered to die for you.... My truck is a 2005 1500 with 6 in lift and 35's. I load a 700+ lbs Polaris Sportsman 700 into the back of it all the time with 6.5' ramps. You should be fine to ride yours in and strap down those ramps to the truck.

whitelight I think that you hit on it with the winch idea. I wouldn't mount it to the truck though. I would mount one on your quad, with some sort of anchor point in your truck bed. That way it would also be useable if you needed it while riding and got hung up some how. If you are alone and way out in the dessert riding it up there isn't really that good of an idea. If something were to happen you wouldn't have any one to help you out.

i already suggested that up top, but since he has a 'sport' quad it would not work/look to good on his, but when/if he gets a new Canams Then he will have a mounting point for a winch.
I know from experience after riding her all day, it's real hard to pick up that beast and put it back in the bed of the truck. that's why i moved, a long time ago, to trailers. ( go for it jay, i made it TOOOOO Easy for ya ____________________________________________ tribuo nos pacis in terra "WE LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE, ONLY BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE" SMOKE DETECTORS SAVE LIVES. Originally, I wanted to take a 2 inch square and weld the adaptor plate for a winch on it. Then have the square tube sit on the bed rails held in the stake holes by more square tubing. Then have the quad winch pull the bike up slowly. I no longer thing this is a good idea.
Riding the quad up wasn't too scary, so I'll just keep doing that. However I also tried pushing it onto the truck bed with the ramp and that worked well too if I get enough momentum going. This was on asphalt though. There is no winch kit that I know of for the YFZ. I have seen some on sport quads, just not one for mine. 2004 Bright White Quad Cab SLT AIRAID Intake Gibson Split Rear Exhaust Superchiped 5% Tint all around Rough Country 3" kit (2wd) 305-65-17 BFG's on Cruiser Wheels Some Audio Mods Lots of Polish and Pimp Juice - - - |
