I feel bad cos the only time I post on here is when I have a problem. But, here I go again. 4x4 is working fine, I get no indicator light up on the dash. Tow/Haul light works fine which leads me to believe that the display is working. There has to be a switch somewhere that turns it on. Any ideas??? Any help would be very appreciated.

Andy

the 4x4 indicator light is part of the VFD (vacuum fluorescent display) and if it's shot, the whole cluster needs to be replaced in order to get it back. can't just replace the vfd. do you have a manual transfer case or an electric one?

Harley not to hijack this thread but my 4x4 indicator a lot of the time will come on when my truck is in 2wd and then when I (manual shift) pull in down 4wd in goes out... then other days it wont come on at all no matter the position of the shifter,..any ideas what to check first

my guess is that it would be a problem with your transfer case position sensor, it's found on the top of the transfer case.

Just like my '88 Jeep Wrangler, as soon as the weather got warm, my indicator started working. There was never an issue with 4 wheel drive, I was spinning all 4 tires, just no indication. I am thinking that there's some kind of switch mechanism that seizes when cold. Annoying, but I can live with it.

the brass one on the right, when you pull it out it looks sorta like a push button.

Do you have the 4x4 dial switch or lever on the floor? I was never a fan of the switches. If it was a switch it would make me nervous, but if you manually are pulling it in I wouldn't give much thought to it....

he has the manual transfer case (me too) and i definitely agree with you, i prefer it too. you can pull it into 4wd so much faster, and you can feel it go into 4x4, you're not relying on a little light.

Yeah, that would probably bug me too....I think at that point I would just disconnect the light somehow (fuse, or something maybe) if that would be possible. Or put electrical tape over it...lol.
