How many miles are on your truck? I don't have any experience with the Dodge OLM because my last Ram was an 04 and it was not an option. I have however been reading that on newer Rams with the OLM that it seems to kick on around 2500 early on and eventually gets longer and longer between the light coming on. Some seem to feel it was set up that way from the factory to ensure the oil is changed frequently during break in. True? I have no clue.

IMO, the manual allows for 6000 mile changes so use that and just reset the OLM when it kicks on early at 2500. 6000 miles on synthetic is no problem barring some type of engine problem that trashes the oil. If you are gooing to go by the OLM light and change at 2500 then use conventional oil. You are wasting your $$$ on synthetic changing it that early.

Sorry I can't provide a better answer for you.

It is. That is how all OLM's work. Mathematical algorithm the computer uses based on how the vehicle is driven.

However, many folks are reporting that initially it seems to kick on right at 2500 miles( I am talking tons of folks saying it comes on right at 2500 and for a few 2500's after that = 5000, 7500, etc... ). Eventually it gets longer between activations.

I have no way to verify those claims or the theory that it is set that way from the factory to ensure frequent OC's during break in? It certainly could be done very easily with some simple programming. I certainly think based on the # of people I have seen post that it runs 2500 for a few times before finally going longer( some say it has gone 10K+ before kicking on after those 1st few 2500's )makes me at least believe it is a credible theory.

I will be curious to see if my new 08 kicks on at 2500?

My wife's Durango came on at 2500. For some reason that is when the first time is set too.

09 Hemi 1500. The OCL came on at 2552, I expected this, breakin oil. The owner's manual lists the oil change interval as 6,000 miles. I changed at 2552 and reset the light. Three weeks later the light rears its ugly head again at 5235. I reset the light then drove 200+ miles, the light did not come on. I believe thte OCL is activated by miles not the condition of the oil. 90 per cent of 3000 miles were highway miles and I don't dog my truck. Any ideas or comments.

You can't rely on the computer. It doesn't know what kind of oil you use.

All it does is base your driving habits vs. time.

Got my first OC message at 5,800 mls, this is right in line with what OEM says it should be. Got to dealer right at 6,000 mls,OC done....message went away....have not seen it back yet ( 7,700mls). On a side note, the tech put a reminder sticker on window, and he wrote the next OC at a 3,000 ml interval, lol.

Been a while since this thread was up. I will update...

The OLM in my 08 Ram did kick on right at 2500 miles exactly. I had already dumped the FF oil at 1000 miles so I just reset it and ignored it. I ran to 4900 miles when I changed the oil again and the light did not come back on.

Ran the next OC to 9985 and it did not trip with a little over 5000 miles. That included a lot of city driving and some towing and was just about 6 months of service.

I agree. I don't think there is a legitimate rhyme or reason to it. My wifes TL would be off as well. Say 20% when the oil change was due, or 70% when you just got it changed. Stupid. I don't care what some jackass at the dealer says....the OCL's are a total waste of wannabe technology.
