Good question. If you have MDS and don't use 5w-20, the MDS won't work. My Chrysler 300C get better than 21 mpg at 80+. My '03 Ram doesn't have MDS, so it will continue to get 5w-30.

On a perfect day I've seen 20.5mpg@65MPH. Most of the time it's around 19mpg. Longer trips over hills/mountains it is about 17mpg.

My best to date on a long trip, all highway, I got 22.5mpg doing 55MPH the whole tank. And that's dividing the miles by how many gallons to fill up the tank from the previous fill up.

If I keep my truck under 70 I get 22 mpg pretty much straight freeway driving but if MDS disengaged then I get around 19-20 mpg.....I think MDS is a great thing for these gas consuming Hemi's. I am using non-synthetic oil until my next oil change.

I run Mobil 1 5w-20 and cruising on the highway I can get 22 mpg. In local driving I've seen 18 if I keep my foot out of it. Just average overall it stays around 16.7 until I step on that loud pedal hard and frequently. Wink

Is there any truth or documentation to this? I'm not aware of any "viscosity sensors" that will disable the MDS. I know ford changed from 5w30 to 5w20 5 years ago simply to raise it's CAFE numbers. Factually I believe that is what actually happened here. You will see better mileage with thinner oil. Being old school, I think you don't get as good of wear protection.
Besides in the owners manual, for the same engine in the 2500+ it recommends 5w30.

I used 10w30 in my last oil change and my MDS still works just fine, kicks in and out flawlessly. Although I do think I'll go to 5w20 next go round for mileage sake. If it's a synthetic, the thinner oil doesn't make that big a difference of wear protection if any I would imagine.
