Hey guys, here's my situation. I got my truck in Nov. of 07. It only has 1600 miles on it.
We are going on a 500 mile round trip next week.
1. Should I change the oil?
The dealer is too far so I would need to go to a 'quick change' place.
2. Can I change to synthetic now and change to a different synthetic later?
Or do I just get a 'Conventional' oil change now and go to dealer or get my own synthetic and change oil when I get back.
Thanks for the help.

The trip is the best kinda miles for the motor, provided you don't flog it. Varying speeds and loads, floor it to 80 or so, then back down to the speed limit and run different speeds during the trip. Change the oil (conventional) when you get back, if then. Actually, yes. Change it when you get back. Too many months have gone by. How the heck do you only put 1,600 miles on in six months? Smiler When I bought mine (used with 86K), I probably did that in the first three weeks.

I'll finish editing this one day... Don't go to the dealer for basic maintenance. Do you have a "quick change" place (besides Jiffy Lube) you can trust? Build a relationship with one shop and WATCH THEM DO THE WORK. Keep those receipts to show the oil changes were done by the book.

For your trip DO NOT get the oil changed "last minute"!!! Do it at least a week before. Better to have a problem while still near home than two hundred miles away.

I changed mine at the first 1500miles,.. then changed again at 3000mi. Then went to regular recommended intervals after that.

My mods are located on or in my truck,.. I have come to the conclusion they work better there than posted on here.

It's official now. Use synthetic oil and save money, as seen on the Today show this morning. When you think about it, it is cheaper, even though the initial cost is more. With my dual Amsoil filter system and the use of the SSO 0/w30 synthetic, I am saving time and money and getting better fuel mileage. I am not 100% Amsoil in the 05 Hemi and our 99 Ram.
