So I started my truck out on regular pennzoil wish I would have never done that. Anyways I switched to Mobil1 and was using oil like crazy. I am going to go with royal purple now on my next change. When I switched to mobil 1 I ran it only about 2000 miles with a cheap filter. I did that a few times to try and clean out the system. Even though Mobil 1 is better do you think I should have to do the same process with royal purple? Also seeing that we hit 105 degrees here in Texas last week what weight should I go with in royal purple? Thanks yall!

run what ever synthetic oil you wish, any synthetic is better than regular pennzoil.... hell baby oil is better at protecting than pennzoil. There is no benefit to short changing a synthetic, run it 5000-6000 miles between changes. You having an 04, it calls for 10-30. If it is still using oil after switching to Royal Purple, i would bump it to a 10-40 on the next change, and see if that helps any.

Royal Purple is an excellent choice. It is what I ran in my 04 and now in my 08. Actually I have been running it since 1990 in tons of different vehicles. Great stuff. Others will chime in and say it is crap, only use this certain other brand because it is better( not ), and yada yada yada... doh RP is one of the top oils out there and if you want to run it do so and ignore them.

No need to do any short oil change intervals switching to it. Just drain the Mobil 1 oil that is in there good as you normally would and start using it.

On an 04 unless you have more than 70K you should still have your 7 year/70,000 mile powertrain warranty to be sure and protect. So, stick to 5-6K intervals per the max allowed in the owner's manual as the member above mentioned. If you are past 70K and didn't purchase any kind of extended warranty to worry about then you can run it out to 10K. RP can go longer than 10K but I would not do it with ANY oil without having an oil analysis done to ensure it can go longer. IMO 10K is a good time to change it on an extended interval.

Actually, I would probably do your 1st & 2nd OC with RP at 5K before trying a 10K run just because an engine takes a bit to adjust, so to speak, to a new oil. You will usually see higher wear numbers initially with an oil the 1st couple runs with it. After 7-10K things settle down and you see a more accurate picture of how that oil will perform in thhat engine. Do 2 OC's @ 5K then go to 10K( assuming warranty is not an issue ).

Filters. You can run any quality filter you wish. On a 5-6K OCI you can run most any middle of the road filter like Purolator, Bosch, Wix/Napa Gold, MOPAR, etc... and be good to go. Just avoid the el cheapo's like Fram. IF you are going to stretch the OCI out to 10K+ then you need to either...

A) - change the filter and top off the oil at 5K( use the same filters mentioned above )

OR

B) - pick an extended drain capable filter such as the new Royal Purple filter, a Mobil 1, K&N, or Amsoil. Any of the above can go 10K. I wouldn't stretch them past 15K however( Amsoil rates theirs longer but I wouldn't personally ).

The new Royal Purple filters( only available at PepBoys - period - no where else now or ever )are some serious filters. Built to the highest standards. On paper anwyay they are a step above K&N and Mobil 1 filters. Haven't been out long enough yet( just came out less than a year ago )to be sure but they are made by Champion Labs who have made quality filters for a long time. I run the RP filters on my 08 and so far so good. For your 04 the part # is 20-253. Should be $14.99.

For oil weight 5W-30 and 10W-30( not below 0 F )were recommended by the factory. In the TX heat I would run RP 10W-30.

Good luck with whatever brand you do settle on. RP is an excellent choice if you do go that route. thumb2

Man that has to be the most elaborate reply ive ever got on here. Excellent info im glad to hear someone else thinking the way I was def. reassures me. I going with royal purple, easier to get, great quality and has def. made a name for itself. Amsoil is good but im making the right choice. Ive been using WIX filters on my truck for awhile and thats all we use at my job and never had issues with them. Im already out of warranty which as much of a head ache as some issues were im not too sad about it. Anyways ill be changing my oil next week and ill let ya know how it works out thanks man.

No war on my part because I could care less what brand people use. Just proving a point that Royal Purple can not be discussed on this site without someone( I was speaking cryptically about no one specific as there are a good sized handful of members here that do it )feeling they have to trash it. My point was proven AND I said nothing about any other brand in the process to start anything with anyone.

My commennt of "Others will chime in and say it is crap, only use this certain other brand because it is better( not ), and yada yada yada... " was not directed at any particular brand or person, although I certainly planned on a response from one person that we did see, as it could have been Mobil 1, Penzoil Platinum, Redline, and yes Amsoil. ANY brand and any one of a number of members here.

I was not taking it in any particular direction. Just a general warning publicly that he should expect the naysayers and trash talkers to jump in and question his decision. As always happens here. Main reason I do not post much in this forum anymore. The self appointed ruling clique of this forum doesn't like it when you praise RP. Not worth arguing every time you post about an oil. I knew this would happen because it was about RP but wanted to let the guy know it was a good choice despite what he will hear to the contrary here.

chillpill Just a joke!!! Just like a person, and their football team. They'll stick with it, whether their good or bad, and defend it till their death. It's personal preference. If it works for ya, use it!

iagree I have used Amsoil for many, many years. I got over a half million miles on an 86 Dodge Lancer ES 2.5 turbo, with no engine problems. That is all the knowledge and fact I need. Oil products are a matter of choice.

NHHEMI,

Your taking things out of context.

No one, including myself, said RP was bad.

I just posted up that in the most recent testing it was proven no better or worse then Castrol Syntec.

Maybe you should read the article before you make judgement.

Have a nice day!
