When I bought my truck, I started using Valvoline SynPower 5w-30. It's almost time to change my oil again and I'm thinking about making some changes. I would like to know what you think of the following oils.

Lucas Oil: 0w-30 synthetic

Royal Purple: light weight synthetics

Amsoil: Signature Series 0W-30 100% Synthetic Motor Oil (SSO)

I know the amsoil has a 35k rating and is tested to almost 65k. Lucas oil also has a synthetic stabilizer to use with any synthetic oil. What do you guys reccomend?

Used Royal Purple for 15,000 miles and was using oil, always low.

Switched to Amsoil before becoming a dealer. Using 0w-20 (ASM) and EAO filter. Both good for 25,000, this away I can change both at the same time. So far no problems, not using oil and level stays on the full mark.

Lucas not sure about, don't know anyone that has used it.

Most of the Synthetic market switched from using Poly-alpha-Olefin's [Group 4], to the much cheaper Processed-Mineral Oil [Group 3] alternative, while retaining the premium PAO Synthetic price. AMSOIL is one of only 2 companies to continue using 100% PAO synthetic base stocks made with expensive pure chemicals. Where each chemical has a job.

[API Group 2] Hydroprocessed - refined mineral oil.
(Castrol GTX, Pennzoil, Havoline, QuakerState, Motorcraft, Lucas oil, Valvoline).

[API Group 3] Severe hydroprocessed - modified mineral oils.
(Mobil 1 Extended Performance, Castrol Syntec, RoyalPurple, Pennzoil Platinum, Quakerstate Full Synthetic, Shell Rotella T, Mobil Delvac 1, Petro Canada Duron Synthetic).

[API Group 4] 100% PAO Synthetics, chemically derived. Chemically built Poly-alpha-Olefins. (AMSOIL)

Simply put you get more bang for your buck with AMSOIL.
Hope this helps.

Motul is from Spain if I remember.

I talked to one of thier reps last year at a show. All I can say is "man their oil is expensive!".

They're more well know in the tuner and motorcycle market.

I use AMSOIL in my lawnmower, weed wacker 2-stroke, chainsaw, and of course all my vehicles.

Might want to check your sources and/or revaluate your speculations.

Motul, a French company, uses POE or PAG (brake, shock, etc.) for their products labeled as full synthetic, which explains the cost.

Royal Purple SAE is Group IV PAO.

Royal Purple XPR and Nitro Plus oils are PAO/POE.

Regardless, pigeon-holing a finished product's performance simply by comparing base oil(s) used in the formulations is an exercise in futility. Additives do much more to define performance. As well, PPD, VII and anti-oxidants can further blur the dividing line between IIIs and IVs in finished form.

BTW - PAO is not 'chemically' derived; it is hydrocarbon derived from crude. The 'man-made' part comes in during the synthesization of the molecules during refinement increasing VI due to the long-chain, uniform structure and virtually eliminating all insolubles.

This is one reason I don't like posting any more. People blow smoke and do not have all of the information or correct information.

Thanks for correcting me on that I wasn't sure which is why I said "if I remember". Apparently I didn't correctly.

Your other statements I agree on. The PAO we're talking about is just the base stock. Additives and how they are mixed is what makes a good oil great, if done correctly.

Other companies can use the same exact additives and base stocks in the same quantities and come out with different results. It all comes down to how, when, temp etc. to have it all work together to produce a great product.

I have a little over 20,000 miles on the last Amsoil oil change. I have the dual filtration system on it which really keeps the oil clean. I highly recommend the Amsoil Signature series 0W-30 .

Not sure about now but mobile one and Amsoil used the same PAO stock. Heard Mobile has made some changes, not sure what they are. Working with GE Turbines I get to spend some quality time with Mobile Reps...I get the unofficial advice and answers that normal people do not get to hear. Lets just say they do not like Purple and cannot say anything bad about Amsoil. Many of my buddies(motorcycle riders) used to use Mobile One, since the changes many people have stopped using it.

AMSOIL purchases a lot of the PAO basestock from Mobil.
