03-ram-2500 (tows 10,000# about 12k miles/yr and drives about 12k miles) Love that truck!

After 9 months, the heater core has gone AGAIN (several words not typed here out of respect to gentler readers).

I read an article:

http://www.4s.com/fourseasons/tech_tips/tech_tips_engli..._Electrolysis_02.pdf

that seems to suggest electrolysis as a possible cause. Aside from flushes, I could not see a way to limit this risk - would some better grounding help?

Any other ideas as to why it would fail again (other than bad part?). I replaced the antifreeze last time so this is close to the cooling flush recommended (?) but maybe I should be doing a flush very 6 months (we are towing in the US desert and in Mexico - the up side being when the thing blows I just bypass it and we dont miss the heat) but the gauge says that the motor seems to run at the same temp down south and up north in the snow so I dont know how much overheating is an issue - is there a better antifreeze I should look for?

Any other preventative thoughts?

BTW I read how much work it is to replace so I will again be seeking professional help (a plan that several other friends have suggested to me before for some reason Wink
thanks
terry

There is a company here in Georgia called AutoCool in Smyrna that installs a baffle in the system. This is supposed to offset the pressure of the fluid going through the core extending its life. This is not supposed to affect heating ability.

Mad I had to replace my heater core back in May. Cost a small fortune at the Stealership. It lasted three months. The stealership has it now. They are feeding me a line about how the engine is responcible for the failure. First they say I might have head leaking. Then they mention vibration, which confirms to me that they are worming away from the warrenty of the previous work they performed. I'm not happy. I plan on doing a heater by pass until winter (in Florida) has come upon us. Hey, it might freeze again this year.

Yup - sounds all too familiar - I still wonder about excess or bursts of current (for example, due to the seemingly flaky alternators) causing increased corrosion but I forgot about adding a ground strap in when I had my second install (within the year). I can also add that there is no short cut - the dash must drop .... hope no one else has to see that trickle on the floor on the wife's side ....
