So I put a tranny temp gauge on my truck but now I'm wondering about the reading it's giving me. Now that the weathers turning cold in TN/KY I would expect the tranny to run a little cooler. However, I would expect it to run only a little cooler.

I have a 52mi drive on the interstate that is mostly uphill one way and downhill the other. My transmission gauge temperature barely raises off 100 degrees.

It used to run closer between 140-180 up till the weather started to change.

My first guess is something is messed up with the gauge but not sure. My transmission has been shifting funny lately. I'm have the gauge tee-ed in on the cooler return line.

Thoughts??? Comments??? Opinions???

return line is not a good place to find the actual operating temp of the tranny... try to find the "out to the" cooler line... or tap the pan.

I had read somewhere before I installed it that it was better to put it on the return line so you knew the temp of the tranny fluid before it went back it. That it gave you a better idea of what your tranny was running because the fluid going back in the tranny was as cool as it was going to get.

I'm not saying its right, just trying to understand.

The last couple days it has worked just fine though. Running about 140~180 on the way to work.
