I don't have the $$ for a new hood right now but I'd really like a hood scoop. Does anyone here roll with one of the 3M taped on Lund hood scoops?

That's what I was afraid of, one of those "too good to be true" scenarios.

Everyone and their brother has this style tape-on scopes on their truck around here-
http://www.northerntool.com/im.../images/80002_lg.jpg From Rangers to diesels you see them on everything. As for my two cents, I know its just a tape on, and I think it cheapens the look of the truck. __________________________ 2005 Ram Regular Cab Long Bed 5.7L Hemi, AFE CAI, Magnaflow Catback, Superchips 3815. I think they look good on our 09 Ram and have stayed down for 9 years with no problems. You just have to install them correctly and prepare the surface right.

Thats absolutely right. There is some thing that you have to put on to make it stick down correctly. I can't recall what it is. I had mine put on at a body shop. It only cost me $45.00 and only took them a little over and hour. No problems what so ever, well worth it as far as I'm concerned. 2007 4X4 Quadcab Detonator Yellow Sport Hemi of coarse, rhino lined,EZ down, nerf bars, driving lights, one tap |

A lot of people use the Lund stick on scoops here. You see them everywhere. That is the 1st strike against them for me. I like to have a unique vehicle and not be a Lemming. Like the SRT-10 hoods. They look great don't get me wrong but EVERYONE with a Ram seems to use that hood now. Just over done. Same with black rims.
I have a friend who used the Lund scoops on his 2001 Ram. From a distance they look ok but up close I am not a fan because of the tape flange/lip. If double sided tape does not stay stuck( permanently - that stuff is pretty much like iron once stuck )1 of 3 things happened... 1 - the surface was not prepped properly before installation to remove all grease, dirt, and wax. The tape will lift if it is not able to adhere directly to the paint. Any kind of contaminant can cause lifting in time( long or short ). 2 - Bad tape. I had this happen to me once. You can get a bad batch of tape and it won't stay stuck no matter what you do. Only thing you can do if this happens, and you are SURE it isn't #1 causing it, is remove the tape and use new. 3 - this is seldom it but can be behind it. Areas with extreme high heat( constant high 100F temps ). If you ever want to remove something that was installed with double sided tape you use a heat gun and heat it up. If you live in the desert of AZ or something where it is always 110-120F+ it can soften the tape during the day at the highest temp point and then something like a highway drive can cause lifting on a hood scoop due to the air flow. Even in this scenario though it is not super common. "Can" happen not "will" happen. If you are interested in a stick on scoop check out the ACS scoop. ACS stands for Advance Composite Specialists. They got bought out by SLP who now makes the scoop. Stylintrucks has always sold it as the ACS but looks like they are now finally calling it the SLP. Same scoop however. It is a composite scoop that has a hidden tape flange and even 2 mounting studs you can use if you don't mind drilling the hood( can snip them off before mounting if you don't want to drill ). It is somewhat along the lines of the Rumble Bee scoop. Very appropriate size for a full sized truck. Popular with the Mustang crowd as well. I used one on a 2005 Silverado and it was a really nice scoop( looked bigger on the truck than in the stock photos - perfect size ). Even though it is taped on it looks like an OEM style bolt on due to the hidden tape flange. I did not bother with using the 2 mounting studs( front corners ). It really looks factory. I haven't seen any Rams or pictures of Rams running it, even though I am sure some people are, but even if some are you would still have something different. If I run a stick on scoop I will use the ACS/SLP scoop. Scoop runs anywhere from $135-$170 unpainted depending on where you buy it. Some places offer them painted as well but IMO you are better off having a local body shop do it so you are sure it matches( very important in an older vehicle with faded paint ). For stick on scoops the only way to go IMO is one with no exposed tape flange. This particular scoop works well with trucks due to it's size. Really looked great on my Silverado. Unfortunately I accidentally deleted my pictures so I can't show it. Moron! http://www.lmperformance.com/image.asp?p=10005&m=23 http://www.stylintrucks.com/pa...px?partfamilyid=2197 You can get one from SLP direct for $130 unpainted or painted and ready to install for $240( non metallic )/$260( metallic ). ____________________________________________________ 2008 Ram 1500 5.7L HEMI 4WD Quad Cab SLT 20's & 3.92's MOPAR Step Bars/BedRug/Mud Flaps * Weathertech Floor Liners * Laramie Dash Bezel * Push Button Start * Undercover Hard Tonneau * Borla Dual Exhaust w/ Vibrant Dual Outlet SS Tips * Elite HEMI Hitch Plug * Firestone Destination LE's Royal Purple #1 |
