I just returned home from Afghanistan in May. Our company was deployed to FOB Sharana, Paktika Province as MP's. I was deployed from October 2006 to May 2008. When I got back home, I felt like I was good to go. My wife had different feelings. To make a long story short, I am getting help from a counselor at the Vet Center. I have noticed that a lot of the soldiers in my unit have had problems since we have returned but very few have sought out help. I recommend anyone who is having any negative issues since returning from theatre, please seek help from your local VA facility. I am as hard-headed as you can get, but I extremely happy (and my wife is too) for the help to I have been receiving.

welcome9Home and thanks.
When I came home in August 2004, I had an anxiety/anger problem I have been going to the VA since April 2005. I have been on meds since then. I hate taking them, but it keeps me level headed and helps me stay married. I know many guys who have the same problems I have, but refuse to be looked at. Don't be ashamed or embarrassed about getting help.
goodluck

Wel, i wish I had gotten some help but I didn't think I needed it.....lol. I went to Afghanistan (Khandahar) in 2001 and Balad, Iraq in 2004, both times as an "activated" MSANG member. I retired from the guard in Jan 05 and got divorced after 10 yrs of marriage in 2007. I was a medic with the guard (Aeromedical Evac) and take pride in my service to my fellow vets. We still have a great country despite repeated attempts by our liberal media to destroy it....

Good on ya! When I got home from my 2nd deployment in 05 I knew something wasn't right - I started counseling about 6 months after getting home and it really helped - I have been out of counseling for about 2 years now and I am going back into it - keep at it, you have to learn to live with it and realize what your triggers are and what sets you off. Of my plt. of 28 Marines 17 of us have sought treatment for PTSD 1 didn't and he is no longer with us - it's a dangerous thing so Vets - swallow your pride and forget the "stigma" and seek help if you think you need it, you owe it to yourself and your loved ones.

Bro, the best thing i did when i returned from Aghanistan was go to fleet and family support center ( or your brachs' equiv) and talked with a counselor, the wife and i have gone lots, and the amount of help is unexplainable. you know what i mean. waking up and not having your weapon, or hearing the freezer door slam and thinking "Mortar", believe me, the kids felt it to. i would have been divorced, had we not gone. great info for the widest dissemenation possible.
