Ok, here goes.

On my way to work on June 26, I got a call Headquarters Marine Corps relaying notice of a Marine casulty in Afghanistan.
I was tasked to be the CACO, Casulty Assistance Calls Officer, for SSgt Eddie Heredia, KIA. That morning I had to perform the most difficult task of my life. I had to inform his father that his son was killed in action due to enemy actions.
In the time that has passed I have gotten to know the family pretty well, and have had the distinct priveledge to assist them through this most trying of times. I never worked directly with Eddie, but he was a fellow Marine and a fellow Staff Non-Commissioned Officer, so I felt a very personal connection to the family.
Today, we laid their son to rest at the Houston National Cemetery with full military honors. The Marine Special Operations Forces Commanding General, MajGen D.J. Hejlick, Commanding Officer and Sergeant Major of 2d Marine Special Operations Battalion all made the trip from North Carolina to honor their fallen brother in arms.
All in all, I have held up well during this whole evolution. I was the one who wanted to, needed to be strong for the family, but I just wanted to share how my last 10 days have been.

You did good Jason! I am sure their family really appreciated what you have done for them. That takes a lot of the heartache away when there is a fellow servicemember that can assist them with everything, instead of like they used to do during WWII, just show up at your door and tell you, or send a telegram....nothing after that. My prayers for his family angel and a usaflag to you for you assistance. Salute

So what have we learned in 2 millennia?

"The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance."
- Cicero - 55 B.C.

Apparently, nothing......

"How far you go in life depends on you being tender with the young,
compassionate with the aged,
sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and the strong.
Because someday in life you will have been all of these."

George Washington Carver
