just wondering if anyone has built their own turbo kit? the turbo kits are pretty expensive (for a good reason i'm sure) i was just wondering if anyone has put together their own system? a turbo seems fairly easy to come acrost, and the piping would be easy enough to do, what else is necessary to have a good reliable and most of all safe system? i assume oil would have to be routed to cool the turbo. what about tuning? what would have to be done to the engine to make it safe to run a turbo on it? the reason i ask is i have acces to a Banks turbo for a Powerstroke, could i whastegate it lower and run it SAFELY on my Hemi? i realsie there is probably much more to this than i expect, so fill me in on what i'm missing.

thanks

I'm not too sure that you want to go that route.

You need a turbo with the proper configuration for the hemi. A diesel turbo won't do.

I don't see why you couldn't if you could do the tuning and if you have experience with turbos already. I have friends right out of highschool with no turbo schooling just guess and check and they have built 12 valve cummins over 1000 ft lbs of torque in their own garages. One guy pegged a local dyno out at 1200 ft lbs. It's a twin turbo Cummins.

I don't see why someone couldn't do it with a hemi.

A gasser motor is paper fragile compared to the Cummins. The Cummins has no throttle and being lean has no ill effect. WAY easier to get power out of it. The aftermarket turbos for the diesels are pretty much the same as for gas engines. But, factory diesel turbos are almost useless on v8 gassers. If the turbo doesn't provide enough CFM, have the proper A/R and turbine size, the truck won't be driveable.

so how much CFM and A/R does a hemi needs, can you name a turbo that will work?

Turbonetics T-60 or Garret GT67 will do the trick with the proper tuning/injectors/fuel pressure, etc.

I'm going to make a turbo out of a furnace inducer motor, and a 12v/120 vac power converter!

I am shooting for 3 hp. Smiler

The CFM would work out well, but the boost would only hit like 10" WC. (0.5 psi) The squirrel cage out of a furnace is actually an electrically driven centrifugal supercharger.

Seriously, you would probably get 10-15hp on a 345hp engine. Maybe more if the furnace was large enough for a 3000 sq ft house.

It can obviously done but after it is all said and done you might as well just go with an existing kit. I'm going to do this with my our next car but only because there is no kit on the market for it. I'm just going to buy an STS Universal kit for it. The STS kit for our trucks isnt that much BTW. Compared to my 350Z kit its a bargain.
