Trouble started last Monday....dtc p0740 (torque converter clutch circuit error)

....thought it was a bad solenoid, So I swapped the TRS from my old transmission.....put in new filters and fluid............nope.....that's not it......

Between the time I realized the converter wasn't locking up and getting my truck into my garage, the trans temp light came on....

Now I've got a big mess to clean.....

This won't keep us from going to the Niagara Falls GTG......Unfortunately, I already sold off my APS converter ... doh

I'll have to clean up the ol' stocker and put it in after I disassemble and clean the trans...ughhh

Even though Edge has accepted ownership of the faulty converters from all the others that have gone out, are they assisting with the trans cleanup charges that go along with their converter explosion?

Yes they admitted to the problem, but they also said it was fixed... this makes me a bit sick. I feel terrible Steve cause I said the Edge converter issue was solved. Frowner

Holy sh*t. I'm kinda glad that Jerry never brought in an Edge 3000 for my truck. Looks like I'll be looking elsewhere in the near future.

yeah.......I'll be looking elsewhere too!!

I ordered this edge converter on March 29 this year...just looked at the email receipt. I've got roughly 2800 miles on it....didn't even get a chance to give it full 10 psi...let alone 14

I wonder if this converter is the reason why the trans downshifted to 2nd prime in the middle of 3rd gear in a WOT run

I just hope that when I pull the trans apart today there's no other damage. It shifted fine into all the gears, and I had no other codes, so I'll keep my fingers crossed

It's not your fault Darrick! I was skeptical about this converter since Jerry's first failure....then the next one, and the next.....When I heard the issues were resolved, I thought maybe they were onto something........So I ordered it.....
then yours failed!!

....and now mine....

I'll be cutting up the edge t-shirt I got with the converter, and use it as an oil rag

Sorry to see that Steve. If you seen the transmission temp light come on, that type of temp is no good for the clutches. When you switched out the solenoid pack, how did you fluid look then?

steve, darrick

just wondering about this.. In your professional opinions, do you two think that edge converters in general have a design flaw for out application, or just when being pushed 100+ more horsepower (F/I, N/O, Etc) at them than a stock setup could?

When I initially pulled the TRS, The Fluid was still red/normal.

Now Its black, and I gotta flush everything out including the cooler and lines. I have a small pony pump that I'll use to purge fresh ATF4 through the lines and cooler

I'm starting to think that since I'm ripping the trans apart anyway....I should put new clutches in to be safe.

I might as well order two sets.....Can I buy them from you or Denny directly?

I don't know what to say here. My converter failed during normal driving........cruising at 65 mph on the highway. This is when the converter clutch is engaged. ....well , supposed to be

So far the Edge 3000 seems to be the only one with the issue, I wouldn't suggest the Edge 3000 for any hemi application even if its 100hp under stock. Myself, I'll never use another Edge converter in any application.


My heart especially sunk when I read your post because at the time I had a few questions about my torque converter, but I hadn't had time to check on it yet. I work shift work, 4 days on - 4 days off and today is my first day off. On my last day off last week (Tuesday) I had taken a guy I promissed a ride over a year ago too, and saw my rpm stall up too around 3300 on a launch, not good. I was 2 hrs from home and towing my jetski so I didn't want to try a do-over. Truck ran and shifted normally all the way home and the trans temps stayed in check, so I thought maybe I saw wrong... the only thing that worried me was the familiar grinding sound from under the truck at low speeds, but I had just traveled on a bunch of gravel and thought it could just be coming from the brakes and even that sound was gone by time I got home. Backed the truck/trailer into the backyard and left it till I could get a look today. I had myself almost convinced till I read your post last night. Got home, had a few hrs sleep, and got a sample of tranny fluid. No more questions, my edge torque converter #3 is also junk.

Ouch Darrick.......quick question....Did you ask for a 3000 brake stall speed or flash stall?.....because without loading up the converter(brake stall) it will flash to a higher rpm.


I disassembled most of the transmission (except for reverse) Opened up the oil pump, and found everything operational! All the valves including the check valve for the secondary circuit move freely. all the gears look good. The clutches look good.....but I'm no expert. I'm gonna order new ones anyway along with some bearings....I'm not sure how hot the trans got, but anything over 250 degrees Fahrenheit cooks the oil and bad for the bearings.

I'm gonna try and get a Hold of SMR transmissions this week. I hummed and hawed about it last week thinking the converter would be ok, but I'll talk to Pat there and see if they have any suitable converters.....I'll give APS a call as well


I must say, The Sharadon trans is a pretty sweet setup. The mods done to get extra clutches look really good! Great Job guys! thumb2
