Ist off let me say its grear to see this site and its dedication to HEMI owners. Im happy to have found it.

Heres my problem and hopefully Ill find the genius who can help. I own a 04 Ram 1500 HEMI
I recently decided to instal a cold air intake system. I purchased from ebau, a no name unit. Had it installed by dealer. When I left dealer I noticed a very load tick type noise from the underneath or by the pass side floor, firewall area. I decided that I purchased a cheap intake and decided to buy a K&N intake with the plastic tube. While waiting I removed no name intake and reinstalled factory intake system. I then drove truck and the tick/exhaust type noise was basically gone, but if i listened carefully I could hear under light acclerationload the noise. Few days later I installed the K&N intake system. When I first started and drove for few miles the noise wa not there, after few miles there it was. This is loud to very load tick/exhaust leak type noise that when in the truck driving sounds like its coming from the pass side floor/firewall area. The noise changes with the amount a gas I apply. When driving at a cruise type speed the noise is bearly noticable. Then if step on gas and vehicle downshifts and rpms rev the noise gets much louder and quicker. The faster you go, the quicker the tick/exhaust noise goes. I have tried to duplicate the noise while in park and just rev the engine but the noise does not occur. I have tried to duplicate noise by putting in drive with foot on brake and rev engine but the noise is not there. I have also noticed that when I first start the truck after it sits for several hours or over night the noise doesnt happen right away. I get in drive for few miles and sounds great, no tick/exhaust leak type noise for few miles, then all of a sudden, next time I step on gas there it is. I originally thought this was an exhaust leak from exhaust manifold so I replaced both manifolds, gaskets and shields with new hardware and drove. After a few miles the noise was there. The noise happens every time I drive and remains untill I stop. I need help, I cant fugure it out. Brought to dealer and they dont know, say its proboly because of intake which I know it isnt as I ve driven serveral hemis with intakes and they dont make the noise. The only thing is with the kn intake the noise iss much more noticable that with the stock intake setup. Why I dont know. Im hopping someone out there has come across this issue and can provide me with some help. Any help at all is greatly apprciated. Thank you in advance for your time. Best Regards, Mark Waterman
PS... Sorry about such a long thread just wanted ta add all the detail possable.

What you are hearing is the "Hemi tick" they all seem to have. I've heard the tick is the operation of the EGR valve. The stock intake system with the big "Hemi hat" muffles the tick so you don't hear it. An aftermarket intake that doesn't use the Hemi hat will make the tick more noticeable. Nothing to worry about. thumb2

First of all... welcome9

I think you can rule out an exhaust leak because it would leak regardless of whether or not you were in gear or moving.

I know that our trucks are sensitive to cheap gas and will tick from the valve train when running crappy gas below 89 octane. This adds up with what you described, getting louder under load or heavy throttle.

With the noise coming from pass side, I would look again at the intake to make sure all is tight and secure in there too. Maybe even take it loose from trottle body to look for anything inside that would rattle around. K&N makes a good intake so I dont believe that is the problem unless not properly installed.

I would also comb through the engine compartment looking for anything loose or not connected. I know this is a stretch, but I have seen dealership mechanics pull cars around and hand over keys with 2 lug nuts on and not even tight. That guy almost blew a gasket... it was his pregnant wife's Durango!!! doh

I hope this helps at least point you in the right direction. There are some pretty sharp folks creeping around these forums so you will probably get some more, and better, input. Good luck.

I have an 05' and mine does the EXACT samething. No matter what fuel I use I here a "ticking" sound coming from the passenger side floor board/firewall area. I have owned a Superchips and Diablo Pedator programmers and it still hmade the ticking sound no matter what fuel or program I ran. I thought it was an exhaust leak. Everything checks out ok. I have no idea why it makes that sound or how to stop it. I hate it. I would love to understand the reason it does it.

Thanks for all the valuable information.

Hey guys thanks for all the replies, ghreat info.
My only response to the gentleman who mentioned its the normal Hemi tick. I originally thought that but what turns me away from that is why would the Hemi tick only happen after driven few miles. When 1st started and driven the tick isnt there. i would think (im no tech though) that it would be more noticable when I first start and remain untill the oil pressure builds and oil starts circulating from sitting at bottom of pan. Also something i didnt mention in original post is that if im crusing and hit the gas to pick up speed and truck downshifts the noise is very evident, but if I floor the gas the engine revs and the noise goes away with pedal to the floor. Then when I let off gas to slow down the tick starts back up again.
Another reply was gas, I have tried a tank of 93 octain but that didnt help.
It woould make sense that the hemi hat muffles the tick, but whats really baffling is Ive driven numerous hemis from 02-09 with K&N intakes and they do not produce the tick. Perhaps mines just much worse
??? I dont know, but its real aggrivating. Almost sounds like im driving a clunker, but we know im not.
IM LOST!!!

There is an EGR Baffle sold by www.3rdstrike.biz for $15.00 that is claimed to stop the noise without any ill effects. I don't have one but have thought about it.

I don't think there is a down side to the baffle; he claims it does not throw CEL's and in addition it reduces the temperature of the incoming air! I'm pretty sure he is a vendor here on HTC - So for $15 bucks it might be the cure?

When you buy the EGR baffle be sure to get two #5277928 gaskets at the dealership parts counter.

I'd be setting up a "sting" opp. Take some pictures of the fuse box in it's normal state. Then take it to the dealer for something unrelated to electrical.... like a muffler bearing or something.. Big Grin When you get it back, and find something tampered with, take a-lot-o-pics of it again... Return to dealership with evidence, and ask for you the Service Manager, and Dealership Owner to have a "chat".... and that you would really like an extended warranty now, due to the fact that hard parts could of been compromised because of the intentional ILLEGAL tampering of his service department....

I would be FURIOUS if someone "tampered" with something on my truck in an effort to increase their own service business. Mad What if he moved the wrong fuse? ABS, Airbags, etc... and put you or YOUR family at risk!

rant off...
