I've gone through a few CAI's on my truck now. Started off with an eBay one that did ok. I got rid of it and bought a Ram Hammer CAI. I had that in my truck for 2 weeks and just couldn't tell any difference with it, and according to my Edge programmer it was pulling hotter air in than my eBay intake was. Well a buddy of mine that has an 06 Ram bought the Ram Hammer off of me, which left me with the stock box again. I couldn't have that, so I decided to try and build an intake. I still had the cone K&N that came with the eBay intake.

So I went to Lowes. Bought me some 3" PVC pipe, 2 90 degree elbows, a 3" coupler and went to work.

My rough draft looked like this, and I ended up running this setup on my truck for quite some time:

Well after posting that picture a couple of times in a few other forums, it got ridiculed enough that I took it off, sanded, primed, painted, and then correctly mounted it inside the engine compartment. The finished product now looks like:

Tell me what you guys think??? According to my edge programmer my intake stays within about 10 degrees of ambient air temps..

That is an easy way for a fully functional cold air intake and it works. I have one similar on my 04 hemi. I went to the local auto parts store and picked up a 60 degree elbow of chrome pipe and a rubber cuppler and mounted my filter on that. I have a fully functional hood scoop and now a real fully functional cold air intake. It was $40 including the filter and about 15 mins. It is well worth it and yes you can notice a difference in performance and MPG.

Differences over stock box:

Nice mellow engine tone. Big increase in throttle response. Slightly lower 0-60 times. Improved fuel mileage by about 1mpg. Intake air temp is on average within 10 degrees of Ambient air temp. (According to Edge programmer).

Price:
3" x 5' Sch40 PVC Pipe - $5
2 90 degree elbows - $8
1 3" coupler - $3
1 K&N Filter (already had it) - $35
Paint - $15

~$66 total.

For paint I used this high temperature outdoor grille paint to prime it with. Then used Duplicolor High Temp engine paint (Low gloss black). Then put 2 coats of Duplicolor High Temp clear coat.

Although I like it, I'm wondering about the 90 deg bends....

I found this on another forum that I frequent...it's for the Hemi Durango. Not sure the motor is setup the same as a Ram, but both have a Hemi....anyways, less hard bends:

Thoughts?

I actually saw that after I made mine, and I like it. I've bought the parts to build another one utilizing the longer smooth 90 degree turn. However I'm still planning on using 1 hard 90 degree coming out of the TB. Hopefully I'll have time this weekend to finish it up and post some pics..

I drive 120 miles daily through the country. This time of year, it's a never ending battle to keep the radiator clean.

Now that would be cool, one less 90 hard bend. I can't wait for those pics!
