I just got off the phone with the dealership and a local RV sales/install center. I gave them the above numbers, and they both said the 1500 would do it, also that I should look into a brake controller and air bags to go with my trailer pkg I have. I know that a 2500 and above would do much better, but i'll only pull this once to twice a year. A big smile was on my husbands face when I told him we might need to get a 2500, we'll make due for now.

Welcome aboard MISCHIEF - we're glad you found us! Yes - you will definitely want to install an electric brake controller. Instead of air bags ($$) you might want to look into Super Springs from MrTruck.com

Thanks for the info i was just getting more than one opinion thats all being that the stories are different. I will go back to the dealer and tell him about what you guys explained to me. im sure that im not the only one the dealer is saying, it can be done, when it cant safely. If you guys are doing it everyday, its from experience and no dealer can get that out of a book! I think Ill tarp it and deal with this when i have more time and money. thank you for all you input.

It can be done but as said above getting it going is only half the battle. I used to pull a 28' Fifth wheel ~7500# with my 05 Hemi. It pulled great and stopped ok... I had lots of power to spare. However, "quick" stopping could be a problem with that much weight. If you do pull it I would recommend getting gauges (Trans, Eng Oil, diff temp). I am not pulling it with a 2500 Cummins. I would also recommend the air bags (firestone). I loved them and will have a set in ALL my trucks.

I don't know if any one else answered it but you definately will need a brake controller.
You will probably want differant mirrors to.

I'll bet you're going to be over on your payload weight when you figure out your pin weight and all passengers, fuel etc etc etc. That is usually where 1/2 tons fall short in regards to towing 5vers.

I pulled a 4 horse gooseneck trailer with a full dressing room for years on the old 1500 ram with no mods other than air overloads and a trailer brake. It wasn't perfect but worked until I could get my new Hemi powered ride Wink
But even on the new truck I have Timbren SES overloads and a brake controller.
