I'm thinking about dumping my exhaust. I have a Magnflow si so as a factory replacement. I am thinking that I can just cut it myself with a hacksaw, so it wont cost me anything. My question is would I need to have some sort of tip welded back on? Since it wouldn't be seen appearance wont be an issue but would it hurt the metal? Also dump it before the axle or behind? One of the reasons I want to dump it is the resonator is at the rear and I thought I could remove the whole piece and if I didn't like it I could easily have it welded back in place.

Well, I dunno about your specific application, but you can buy a compression clamp and a turn down tip at most auto parts stores... I think that the origional pipe size it 2.5", so just get a turn down that was spread at the end.

It's easy to butt weld 2 pieces of the same size metal pipe together, so just make a straight cut incase you don't like it.

If it were me, and I had the same question on where to put it, I would cut the resonator off and put the tip on back there, see how you like it. If it's not loud enough, cut the pipe off after the muffler and put the turn down there.

I would buy one of the cheap alum tips, not a chrome one.

That's just me... and what I would do.

HTH...

It's fairly easy to do... and if you don't want to weld, you don't have to. Get yourself an exhaust band clamp like the pic below - works great, and inexpensive.

I would dump the exhaust before the rear axle, and you definitely want to install a turn-down from the muffler (see the next post).

Just remember the closer you cut it to the engine the more noise your going to get in the cab.
If your truck is an MDS version you better really think about it. Frowner

No MDS. Wink But the Magnaflow isn't quite loud enough for me. It was fine at first, but I've gotten used to it so now I kinda want it a little louder but without the interior resonance. Maybe I need to just have the resonator taken out with the exhuast still ran out the rear side. I'm not sure how much difference the resonator makes? dunno

Well, if you're ever in my neck of the woods, feel free to come around and hear my OL's exhaust to see if it's too loud for you, I just got it put on...

I have vids in this forum under new exhaust...

I have a magnaflow with no resonators, dumped right behind the cab. I get a little resonance but not enough to be bothersome. Just my opinion, but I would just go to a good muffler shop and have them cut it off by the axle, start it up and keep chopping until you get the sound you want. The pros of having a shop do it is that they can bend a piece of your old pipe to make a turndown, therefore you are only paying for labor (cost me $20 to have my duals cut off and turndowns put on) plus they can stick an extra hanger on if necessary.

I was told mine had to be 18 inches behind the cab, so thats what I did. They also put mine in the factory mufller spot and used the factory hangers.
