So, I have been wondering. If you y into a SI/DO muffler, is that really much different than a DI/DO muffler? There is still only 1 muffler, and no need for the y-pipe. Possibly even better.
I am looking at the magnaflow DI/DO mufflers, and they list the "tru-x" core. Would this be a whole lot different than an X-pipe and 2 mufflers? I mean a muffler doesnt really increase horsepower, it helps with noise level and tone of the exhaust note. Performance is a function of better exhaust flow, this is almost like straight pipes with an x-pipe.... right? I'm not trying to be cheap(really), I'm just looking into the options. So, what if I cut off the y-pipe, install DI/DO muffler and run 2.5 in. pipes out the side behind rear tires. Is there something I'm missing? What makes the conventional x-pipe/ 2 mufflers set-up the best way to run true duals? Is it not a good idea to "muffle" the x-pipe? Any thoughts? This message has been edited. Don't waste your time on a Y pipe. At the least get the muffler with the X pipe in it. X pipe and true duals flow much better and scavage way better than a Y pipe any day.
I guess if you don't care about performance and just want it to look cool and sound good, then the stock Y pipe will do just fine. 1959 Buick Electra 4 Door Sedan 1959 Pontiac Star Chief 4 Door Hard Top 1976 W200 Dodge Power Wagon 383/ 727 4x4 1986 W100 Dodge Power Ram 318/ 4 speed 4x4 2007 Dodge Ram Single Cab Long Bed - almost no options except posi and HEMI! www.Pontiac-59.com |

The y-pipe is going away. No point upgrading that abortion when duals is really what I want.
I'm just weighing the DI/DO muffler against the X-pipe/2 muffler setup. Performance is priority one. The Magnaflow rep says there is no difference in performance, but it is much quieter than the 2 muffler set-up. The core uses the same stamping as the Tru-x x-pipe. I'm doing all the pipe from the cats back in 2.5 in. so when the LT headers go in its a cut, a flange, and a wrench... Done! Don't have header cash right now. Only question is am I just being cheap with the DI/DO muffler or is it worth a shot? I've seen them listed for $95, might have to try it. Any thoughts? 05 QC/SB 1500 4x4(awd) off-road. I think it's worth a shot. I just don't like how magnaflows sound and I didn't know those existed when I ordered my parts. It will probably be cheaper and easier than x pipe and duals but it depends on what sound you want.

I think other companies make DI/DO mufflers too. I like the Magnaflow sound, it's deep and smooth with no "pop". I was in a muffler shop friday and he had one of the Magnaflow 18" DI/DO mufflers in stock and let me look at it. Straight thru, you can see right thru this bad boy. The only thing is the x-pipe inside is full of holes. You think this would affect the flow? He showed me a single muffler and it's the same thing with the holes, but this is the x-pipe for the exhaust system, should it really have holes in the x-pipe? Seems like a bad spot for a bunch of holes.

Having it installed next wed. with 2, 4" stainless Magnaflow slash tips, exit behind rear wheels.
So would this qualify as a true dual exhaust? Other side, just because I've already taken the pic. This message has been edited. Last edited by: MrHemi, 05 QC/SB 1500 4x4(awd) off-road. Yes that would qualify as true dual exhaust, you are coming into it dual and exiting dual.

I found it on an ebay store.
http://stores.shop.ebay.com/va...rmance__W0QQ_armrsZ1 It was $82 w/free shipping. I like the Magnaflow sound, I'm just hoping it wont be too quiet. The Magnaflow rep said it would be quieter than an x-pipe/2 muffler system, with the same dual exhaust performance. We'll see Wednesday... 05 QC/SB 1500 4x4(awd) off-road. In a city of over 1,000,000 not one muffler shop including performance shops have recommended nothing other than a custom y pipe and 3" in and 3" out single for our hemis. They could make a lot more money saying to get an x pipe with duals. If you want to look cool or prefer duals, by all means go for it. But for anyone to tell you that you are wasting your time your time with a custom y pipe is just wrong.

I'm going to disagree with that. Dual exhaust has always been better than a y pipe and single. Not to mention an X pipe is way better than just regular true duals.
Look through the posts on here and look at how many shops say that they can't put duals on a hemi or that they can't remove the resonator and all that other BS they tell you. Most of them are just exhaust shops, not speed shops. I'm willing to bed that a truck with a Y pipe and single exhaust will be out performed by a x pipe dual exhaust system by 5-10 hp and ft lbs. 1959 Buick Electra 4 Door Sedan 1959 Pontiac Star Chief 4 Door Hard Top 1976 W200 Dodge Power Wagon 383/ 727 4x4 1986 W100 Dodge Power Ram 318/ 4 speed 4x4 2007 Dodge Ram Single Cab Long Bed - almost no options except posi and HEMI! www.Pontiac-59.com |
