Barack Obama's poverty-stricken half-brother surfaces in Kenya

George Obama, Barack's half-brother, lives 'like a recluse' in a shack outside Nairobi.

Barack Obama wants to live in the White House - but his youngest half-brother lives in the poorhouse.

George Obama, one of the candidate's seven living half-siblings, lives on pennies a month in a hut in Africa, the Italian edition of Vanity Fair revealed.

"No one knows who I am," George Obama, 26, told the magazine. "I live like a recluse, no one knows I exist."

He lives on the outskirts of Nairobi in a 65-square-foot shack decorated with posters of the Italian soccer clubs AC Milan and Inter, and a calendar of beaches.

"I live here on less than a dollar a month," he said.

The younger Obama has a front-page newspaper photo of his famous brother, the Democratic candidate who lives in a $1.65 million restored Georgian mansion in Chicago.

George Obama and Barack Obama, 47, share the same father, Barack Hussein Obama, who died in a 1982 car accident.

A spokesman for Barack Obama declined repeated requests for comment yesterday.

George Obama said he met his famous brother as 5-year-old, and again in 2006 when Obama toured East Africa and visited Nairobi.

"It was very brief - we spoke for just a few minutes," he said.

During the event at the Saddleback Church, Barack Obama told Rick Warren that America's greatest failure was forgetting the principle as expressed by Jesus Christ in the Book of Matthew. "Whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me."

How ironic, then, that we find out that Barack Obama's own half brother, George Obama, is living in the most squalid poverty imaginable in a shack on the edge of Nairobi in Kenya existing on a dollar a month. George Obama's life is as hard as can be, as the shanty town he lives in is so rife with violence that the police don't bother to even arrest people; they just shoot them.

It's a contrast that might well come from the Bible or Shakespeare. On the one hand we have a man, Barack Obama, who is rich, powerful, and famous. He is beloved by tens of millions. He might well become President of the United States. On the other hand we have his brother George Obama, poor, helpless, obscure. Both are sons of the same father. Each life could not be more different.

One does not know of the details of how Barack Obama regards family and its obligations. But I wonder if anyone reading this were as well off as Barack Obama and knew that any family member were living in such squalor as is George Obama, how long it would take before that family member were taken from that squalor, cleaned up, maybe gotten a job or educated, and certainly not allowed to live like that a single more minute than it would take to fly to Nairobi, get him, and take him away to America?

This should especially be true of a politician who likes to lecture other people of their obligations to the poor and the oppressed. "The least of my brothers..." indeed.

The case of Barack Obama's neglect of his own brother George Obama is of a phenomenon one notes about too many liberals. They tend to substitute public morality for the private kind. They can be stingy jerks in their private lives, but it is all balanced out if they are in favor of raising the tax on capital gains or increasing welfare spending.

It's time Barack redistributes a bit of wealth to his brother George.
