I had a Pioneer 6.5" flip out monitor installed in my dash. Since then I have blown one front and one rear door speaker. Been doing a little shopping and came across Kickers SS series 6.5" components which i really like. Of course my truck has 6"x9"s in the front doors and 5 1/4" in the rears. Kicker makes the components in a 5 1/4" but not in a 6"x9". However, they come with an adapter so that a 6.5" will fit in the 6"x9" location with a cutout for the kicker tweeter. Anyone have any input on quality of 6.5's. Would that be a down grade? Upgrade? im not running an extra amp, just powered by my head unit. Would this be a smart move or should i just find some really good 6x9's? Any input or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

There is no way your head unit is going to power a Kicker SS series component system properly, they have a 200 watt RMS power handling if you're going to use the head unit and no sub i suggest a good set of 6x9. a round speaker tend to have less distortion but a 6x9 has more cone area so it will give you more and deeper bass.
I'm not running 6x9 so i can't suggest any but i know some don't fit.

If you are looking for a component set in 6x9's, Eclipse makes a set that could be ran off the H.U. The only thing is all component sets sound better ran off an amp. As sppb said 6x9's will put out more bass due to the size of the cone. The JBL 6x9's I have sound great in my truck, nice bass response and good mids and highs. Till I add subs the 6x9's keep me content.

i installed alpine 6 1/2 type- r componets in the front and the mids and highs sound really good but there is no bass, you would need a sub to make that up. thats what the componets are made for

Thanks for the info. I do have subs that are going to be put in. 2- 12" Kicker solo baric L7's. I am looking for more bass than factory and something that wont be blown by the tv. Kicker prefferably. Would the kicker SS sound better than factory speakers just run off of the tv even thought they arent hitting at full potential? This is mainly a "look" thing. I like the look of them and if they will sound better than factory, I think I will go that route but if they will sound worse- then nevermind. What if I step down to the RS's. Does anyone have a link to kickers biggest baddest 6x9's? I will take a look at them too. Thanks. Well, can anyone explain the difference between say, a 6.5" speaker and 6.5" component speaker. I really dont know.

if you have the money to buy a SS component system and not using it at full potential go ahead, maybe latter you can add an amplifier for them, i never herd them but at that price they better sound good.
The difference between a 6.5 coaxial and components is the coaxial have the mid bass and tweeter together and usually only uses a crossover for the tweeter that is the reason they also are called "full range" speakers. the component system has separated components, mid bass and tweeter for 2 way or mid bass, midrange and tweeter for 3 way and have crossovers for every one off them, suitable for more elaborated installations where the placement of the components is important to enhance the staging. Due to the materials and complexity of some high tech components they're price can go close to $2300.00 (that is crasy)

I think I remeber reading somwhere you can take the 5 1/4" plate off and it made a hole big enough for a 6 3/4" to fit into?

Also how the heck are you fitting 12" L7's into your truck with enough air space in the box? Are you taking your rear seat out or something?

I have a buddy who is running 2 12" L7 subs and they take up darn near the entire rear of his jimmy. I would really like to know how your going to be putting these in as this was the subs I wanted to use as well.

We put a a set of PlanetAudio loud speakers in my wifes Trans Am. She is also running an amp powering only a 12"(?) sub. They are very clean and have a great volume holding capasity (sorry, the term just escaped me all of a sudden). I understand wanting to keep it the same brand all around, but these speakers are very impessive. Also I don't know there bass abilaties since she is running the sub the speakers only have to handle highs and mids. Just food for thought I suppose.
