My roommate has an 08 V6 charger and damn that thing is quick for a V6. I'm fairly certain I would kill him from a stop but on our way home from work we usually run them down the highway and it's usually a pretty damn close race from 60ish-115. It pisses me off

Hopefully by the end of the summer I'll have some 4.10s and some street tires. and then bye bye V6 Charger

His car is bone stock. My truck probably runs low 15 sec 1/4s on the street, 14.5 at the track.

I'm telling yall, it's close on highway runs.

You better hope with 4.10's you are only racing him from a dead stop. That would be worse on the highway.

Why would 4.10s be slower from a highway run? It will still run through the RPM range much quicker than 3.55. I can do 90 in 2nd gear. That's awful for racing.

That has always been my experience. My R/T would romp off the line. Could take a Z28 or WS6 through 1st/2nd, and then it was over come third. You are going to wind up quicker, max out quicker, and shift more often. I don't know if that is the answer, but all those things combined may be why. Or I could be completely wrong.... Big Grin

thats because our trannies suck. Even now, when I hit 3rd at about 90 its pretty damn slow. I've never even been close to 4th at WOT.

I can feel my truck start to pull at about 4000. That means I'm not really pulling that hard from 0-about 40. That's WEAK!

I guess 2-3 is a big jump, if your rear end gears are steeper you can move through that 3rd gear quicker, you'll get into your power band quicker and accelerate quicker.

That's why all the old 4 speed manual cars were so quick. All 4 gears were real close to each other. Like the M21 and M22 Muncie 4 speed. 1st gear was 2.2: and 4th gear was 1:1. Thats close, they never lost momentum on their shifts because all the gears were so close together. Our trannies are the opposite. We need that lower gear to accelerate through the gears and power bands quicker.

Another point to consider, With our ridiculous 5th gear over drive our trucks have the gearing to top out at over 200 mph (with 3.55 gears and 31" tires like I have). Of course our trucks don't have the power or aerodynamics to go that fast. If we built our trucks for top speed we would probably want to use a super low gear like a 4.10 or 4.56 so we move through our gears quicker. I would bet that with a 4.10 gear our trucks could do 140 pretty easily. With 3.55s I bet it's a lot harder.

Well I run mid 14s and I only have bolt ons. That's pretty quick for a pretty much stock truck. After the 4.10 swap I don't think I'll be complaining.

That all makes sense. I was just speaking from experience. Seems the quicker you get towards your top end, you better hope the car you are racing is too. If you hit 100, and don't have much left, and the car you are racing is at 95 and can hit 160, then he is gonna be romping you if he is on your tail already. And since you were talking highway racing, that is what I was thinkng. My R/T had 3.92's and I got my ass handed to me on highway drop downs. Off the line, light to light, is was a beast. As long as I could tame the tires.
