If there isn't a maintenance record that came with the truck, then I would play it safe and replace the plugs and PCV valve at the very minimum. Most folks go with NGK plugs (#5306 LZTR4A-11) - they go for about $3 each (you'll need 16 of them). Change the oil with a good synthetic oil such as AMSOIL, Royal Purple, or Mobil 1. Check the air filter as well. Most likely the rear diff and tranny fluids will need attention too!

Is it worth it to step up to a platinum plug?

bearster I am right at the same milage as you, and I have never used anything except what Mr. H recommended. Truely if your maintance records stoped at 40K,... you are definatly due for a change,... can't hurt to get a base line. I also use royle perple all around. engine, diff,..ect. remember when youchange out the plugs do the plug wires also. 8mm taylor shorties work great.

I'm not sure I understand the question. The only plug wires from the factory were long wires. The shortys replace the long wires. The long wires all go across the engine to a plug on the opposite side. The shorty wires go to the other plug in the same cylinder.

Yep. And all the 5.7 Hemi crate motors I've seen had shorty wires on them. Not the newer coil packs.

I put in irridium plugs at about 45K. I thought I read that we have to run at least platinums and that's what the guy at 2 of the 3 autoparts stores said. No one had 16 of anything in stock except irridiums so I went for it. I don't really see a difference but they're supposed to last longer. Oh well, about $110 and only took about 90 minutes to take out the old ones and put in the new ones. It's not as hard as I thought it would be or as hard as others made it sound

i have read to stay away from platinums because the platinum coating on the electrode could fall off into the cylinder. iridiums have been used with good results and alot of guys use 5306s from ngk. i use them and they work pretty well
