Hey guys, I have a powder coating question. I have the 20" chrome wheels on my 04. I contacted my local powdercoating company and they said that I would need to take it to the local U-blast to sand blast it. So I called them, and they said that all we need to do is sandblast it to make a rough surface on the chrome for the powder coat to stick to. And that if the chrome starts chipping off while we're blasting then I need to take it to a chrome plating company to take the rest off. Does this seem accurate? Has anyone else powdercoated their chrome rims? Ive also read that all you need to do is clean the rim really well.. blah blah. So any insight would be great. thanks guys. I'll be going with the semigloss/matted black

PS Post any pics if you have done this!

Your rims should be the chrome clad... just take the plastic cover off of them!!

skip the sand blasting, and head straight to the chrome removal vat. The chrome is "plating" on top of aluminum in your case. not like the newer style plastic chrome clad. That "plating" will eventually bubble, or chip. the powder coating will stick to it like it is, but any contaminates under the plating will cause it to peel later. goodluck1

I am pretty sure that 20" bubble rim is not a 'clad' style wheel. There is no plastic sound when you tap on them, they are basic chrome wheels. I think the 'clad' came out in '06.

Current mods:

Exterior: 2003 RC short bed Ram. Chrome 20" Motto wheels, 275/55/20 Bridgestone Duelers, tint, functional SRT-10 Hood, Street Scene bumper cover, de-chromed and painted rear bumper, body matched grill shell, mirrors, door handles, tailgate handle and antenna mount, billet grill and bumper inserts, Bushwhacker street fender flares, polished "Ram" 3rd brake light cover. Snuglid tonneu cover with a bedrug.

Engine: Flowmaster 40 series dual exhaust, 3rd Strike dual filter with throttle body spacer.

Audio: Alpine 9885 with IPod, Infiniti Reference 3.5", 5.25" and 6x9's, two Kenwood DVC 12" subs with three Kenwood amps running it all through Monster Cable wiring. Optima red-top.

Interior: Suede headliner, color matched A&B pillars, overhead console, and rear light surround.

Pretty positive there was never a Chrome wheel that wasn't clad on the Rams for 20's. There were Polished Aluminum rims, but Chrome IS Chrome Clad. My 03 had 20" Chrome, and they were just plastic over metal. And that was as early as you could get for the Hemis.

didnt know they used plastic chrome on 02-05s. thought that was only from 06 on. good to know. thumb2

very easy way to tell. tap on the wheel (spoke area). If it sounds hollow, it's plastic, if it sounds like metal.. it's polished aluminum.

They are definitely Chrome Clad (plastic). You can't really take the covers off because the wheel is not finished below. It will be very rough. Your best bet if you have to change the color is buy different rims or find a set of the polished rims. They came on the Rumble Bee and on select other Rams.

The polished ones are obvious. They are simply "polished". Far from chrome. But, now that I know what I know, I would rather have those....lol.

My 2 cents, people complain about the whole plastic clad thing, but I see it as completely positive. Mine are pretty much scuff and stain proof, very low maintenance, and clean up and polish as shiny and good looking as any "true" chrome rims and all it takes is a quick wipe.
