I think the very first thing that you should do is to measure the over all height of the 20's and the original 17's. The wheel diameter doesn't matter as far as gearing gos/ It's the over all height of the wheel tire combo. If they are close enough it shouldn't matter. But if there is a big differance in going to the 20's then you might want to regear.

Going up to the 3.92 might not hurt your gas mileage at all. There are guys going from 3.92 to 4.56 that are claiming better mpg. There is less pull on the motor the better gearing it has, therefore burning less fuel, I guess.

I say do it. IMHO the big 20's need at least 3.92 to get going efficiently, and this is one (rare) case where you shouldn't have to sacrifice mileage to increase performance.

so leaning only towards gas millage and not performance at all is it worth going up to 4.10s or or would it be better to have the 3.93?

I can't imagine those would be much different, although you would gain just a hair of performance too. If there are guys going from 3.92's to 4.56's and getting better mileage, I think you are safe anywhere in between. But with big rims/tires you should lean toward a lower end gear for sure. That is Chevy's problem IMO with their trucks. Forever they ran like 3.07's and such in there light trucks. Probably do 180 on the highway, but slow as heck off the line.

I don't get the 4.56s helping gas mileage. I have 3.92s and the truck has good torque and lights em up easy. I would go to the 4.56s for the joy of the torque multiplication, but in no way assume equal or better mileage. I think 3.92 to 4.10 is a good range for people who still want some civility on the highway. I no longer have an interest in being civil, so I might do the 4.56 swap when the boss lets me.

I went from 3:92's to 4:56's and my highway mileage went up 2 mpg. If you figure your 5th gear ratio is .67 to 1, it equates to an old trans. with no overdrive and 3:23 gearing. If you are spending that kind of money for a gear swap, go with 4:56's. You won't be sorry.

I drive a divided highway to and from work about 40 miles round trip every day. Speed is always between 70 and 80 depending on traffic.RPM is 26 - 2700. More passing punch AND better mileage, how can you lose. IMO there is no downside to 4:56's

Another plus is that the trans. will stay in 5th going up hills and under light acceleration whereas with my 3:92's it would shift back and forth between 4th and 5th gear.Ergo your whole drivetrain will live longer with 4:56's.

Is this on the stock 275/60/20 tires, (4:56) or do you have a different diameter tire?
