this may be a really stupid question for those of you that know what the guts of our x-fer cases look like, if so smack me.

would like to swap to 4.56 gears but with it costing so darn much for us 4X4 guys, it got me thinking, why dosen't someone make a gear kit for the x-fer case? Dosen't that make sence? Power is transmitted to both front and rear through the x-fer case why not gear it diffrently there in just one spot rather than two places at the axles? Seems like that would be cheaper to make the gears and easier to install them. I'm sure there is a reason why this isn't done but I don't know what it would be, someone help me out here.

My bet is that the transfer case is a 1 to 1 due to the trans doing all the shifting...

If that is the case, does it have to be? Rock crawlers use x-fer cases with reduction....but on trail only rigs dunno

Did some searching, and did find a kit for high range reduction.Don't know if there's one for the Rams though.http://www.4wheelparts.com/pro...5029&jeep-parts=true

1986-95 Samurai;5.14:1 ratio;18.3% high range reduction;127% low range reduction

These Rockcrawler kits provide a high range reduction to correct highway gearing and an awesome low range reduction for offroading, rockcrawling and letting you run larger tires. Kits come complete with new input shaft, high output gear, new counter gear, counter shaft & bearings, thrust washers and gaskets. It even comes with oil.

that would work perfect, 18% reduction would put me close to 4.56 gearing.....wouldn't need the low range reduction though. didn't see any 243 transfer case kits though, my guess is the Rams are not made into rock crawlers too much LOL

thanks for the info!!!
