Please someone go through or tell me where I can find the procedure for replacing the front shocks on my '06 4X4 front shocks (do I need spring compressors) and what brand. The Bilstein dealer quoted $140 for the front and $80.00 for the rear-wow. Any suggestions?

Im not sure about bilstein, but they should have a plastic strap keeping them compressed when you get them, just put the top bolt on, line it up with the bottom and cut the strap.

They're no problem to install.

As for getting the old ones off, you should be able to compress them enough to pull them out of the hole with just your arms (with the truck jacked up), I know thats how we did it.

..uhh,the 06 4wd front shocks are a coil-over design, different than the 05's shocks. You would need a spring compressor to remove the springs from the shocks. Unless you are buying the shocks w/coils as an assembly, that can be done without a spring compressor. So,if the dealer is charging you just to replace the shocks, and swap the springs-I would find out what is included with that pricing.

ok...this is might be a stupid question but i have an 03 2500 4x4. i was looking at the book on shock replacement and it did not state anything about jacking the truck up. i have never replaced shocks on a 4x4 before and am wondering if you can truly leave the truck on the ground while replacing? it seems possible as the springs hold the weight of the vehicle...??? Thoughts on this?

Maybe in the rear? Not sure. I have always thought you would jack the truck up to unload the shock as much as possible....front and rear. I did shocks on my old Dakota, but can't remember what we did as that was back in 01/02.

ok...it has been a while since i have done shocks. last was on a 96 ram 2wd, so the 4wd concept is new to me. i just was not sure if there really was any tension on those things. found a site that had the bilst. HDs for my truck at $74 each...thought that was a good price.

What about bushings/sleeves? That is what I always have an issue trying to find. Not sure if you have to call most places or what.

talked to the site owner and was told all bushings come with shocks...bad thing is that they are on a national back order at this time and will not be avail until oct.
