It's on an '03 4X4 Quad Cab. I've got the jest of the process, the only thing I'm not sure about, is separating the ball joint and tire rod. The DIY I found, says use "Special Tool #8677." What is it? Is there a common tool I can use? Thanks!

Are you doing a wheel bearing or just replacing the whole hub? I recommend just replacing the hub. My cousin got a mopar hub for his 02' ram for 50 bucks on ebay. The whole process for that is really easy, as simple as taking bolts off and putting them back on.

Seems like an awfully simple tool to cost $200! So you would have to separate the ball joint and tie rod end to replace the bearing? Is that just to be able to get to the bearing or what? If taking the hub off doesn't require all that, I would go that route too.

The tie rod's balljoint bolts onto the spindle, one nut and its out of the way. Not 100% nessissary to even take it off though.

Anyways, I know we've had that whole assembly (A-arms, tie rods, hubs, axle, spindle, all) on and off my truck a few times and never needed ANY special tool.

How'd you do it? I tried it today, and there is no way I can get a socket/wrench on the hub bolts without pulling the axle out of the hub. I tried to use a pickle fork, and all that did was tear the ball joint boot, so now I have to replace that too. Mad

Sorry for the late reply, we took the axle out of the hub, just took the nut off the upper A-arm ball joint and let the spindle hang down, and the axle had enough room to pull out. With the truck jacked up by a floor jack.

I tried all that. I had the axle nut off, the upper ball joint nut, and the tie rod bolt off. I couldn't get anything to budge. I tried a pickle fork, And a big C clamp, which was a failure too. I gave up, and I'm just going to take it to a shop on Monday.

Well given its been in there for a few years you can assume theres some rust on the rungs of that axle, get something blunt about the thickness of the axle and a hammer and persuade it to come out. Big Grin
