Noticed a bunch of grease on the front passenger side wheel well and on the back side of the brake caliper this afternoon, have not had a chance to inspect the cv boot or do you call it a drive axle boot. Never the less has anyone ever had a problem like this or replaced one of these boots, looks like it could be a costly pita!

18.50 at Advance auto.

You'll have to get the axle nut off. We used the spare tire, it has a hole cut out, where we could use a socket with the tire on the ground (so the axle couldn't turn). It takes a hell of a socket, we used a 3/4 drive racket, I can't remember the size of the socket. Not sure if you have one of those.

One the axle nut is loose, jack it back up, take the spare off. Take the nut off the upper control arm ball joint so you can let the rest of the wheel assembly hang. We also took the tie rod end off the spindle so we had more flexiblity.

Pry on the axle til it comes out of the spindle as you lower the spinder. Its a tight fit but it will come out, alot easier than what you have to take off to get it else ways.

Then cut off the old boot, in the CV joint on the axle will be a snap ring with ears (maybe called a bull ring?), take a pair of needle nose pliers and pry it apart. CV joint falls off. Put new grease in the CV (comes with boot), place the boot on the axle, put CV back on, snap ring should auto lock back in. Pull the boot back over the CV like stock, the instructions should show you how to attach it. We used a screw driver and a pair of pliers to tighten the straps. Then reassemble.

Really an easy job, as long as you have a socket big enough for the axle nut, if not, run the sob til it breaks.

The guys at advance wouldn't sell the boot to me, said it was to hard to people to put on and they always returned it. They underestimate how good a mechanic my old man is. Big Grin
