Good info. thumb2

I was trying to remember the first time I saw nitrous on a motor. I know drag racers have been spraying for a long time. Did they spray N2O back in the sixties to any great extent?

Big Grin I Googled it
nitrous oxide was first used in the world war II as enhancement system in the fighter aircrafts. In one of the technology the fighter planes consisted of mechanism where by the planes could gain additional acceleration when nearing enemy target to increase the the chances of hiting the enemy.

N2o systems for automotive applications have been around since the late '70s.

The first one I ever installed was on a brand new 1980 Turbo Trans Am....

Let me add that the anemic 301 Turbo motor was pulled at less than 1000 miles and replaced with a 478 cube big block Chevy.

Did the project for a fellow in Schenectady NY at the time. Used NOS high flow solinoids to feed a 250 hp wet shot.

On slicks with open headers the car ran 11 flat @ 124 mph in street trim. It had more but we would have had to cage it to make it legal at the track.

So is the nitorgen part just a safe way to carry the oxygen untlill its sperated? Or does nitorgen have a role in the hp increase?

Liquid Ox. is far too volitile and dangerous, and if Im right its also the nitrogen keeps the density of it for a more controled burn?

Your pretty close...as I understand it (not a chemist mind you)the nitrogen acts as a buffer to help control the rate of release of the oxygen.

Someone may be able to come up the exact chemical reaction on this.

Wink

i read up about it, and if you use straight oxygen you get a WAY hotter burn, and it is also injected into the motor in a gaseous form as opposed to a liquid.

before i started running nitrous i thought about trying oxygen, like a welding cylinder @ +/- 3000psi through a regulator to bring it down to something sensible to shoot through an engine. i looked into it and it has been tried, and the combustion temperatures are through the roof and it is WAY more unstable than N2O. search it on google, the amount of info you can find is pretty crazy.

Its simple, more oxygen= ability for more fuel, and more fuel and oxygen = more poooof and more poof = more pressure, more pressure = more power = more power = more dirty underwear= mad wife!
