ok,i just purchased a new zex kit for my 08 hemi.i plan on a window switch and a timing retarder for starters.i want to be able to run my sc tune and change timing easily. for example,im cruising saturday night and a stock tundra pulls up next to me.i want my full sc performance tune so i can beat him without using n2o.then i wind up next to a ford lightning.its going to take the n2o to even come close to competing with him.so i flip the switch, but now i have to back my timing off 2 - 4 degrees to stop detonation, wheres my little screwdriver to set my retard back ,damn its too late the lights green, hes gone.there must be a quicker, easier way.can i wire a switch in line with the retarder so i can keep it set for n2o and flip it on with the n2o when i need it?

I don't see why not. What size shot are you running, I run a 150 shot on the 87 tune without retard, just 2 range colder plugs....not sure, but I would imagine retarding the 91 tune, might just cancel out any gain....?????

he wants to run the 91 tune all the time, including while he's using nitrous. he's using the timing retard unit (timing twister i imagine) to take out a couple degrees of timing so he can safely spray his truck on the superchips 91 tune. joe, i had thought about this before, let me know what you think about the timing twister and what sort of hookup procedure it is, i think it would be worth buying.

but to answer your original question joe, it depends on how the installation is done. my guess is that it would go inline with your cmp and ckp (camshaft position and crankshaft position) sensor signal wires, or maybe just the ckp. i'm not sure what other wiring there is to this, i saw a schematic once but i can't remember. you obviously wouldnt be able to just switch the ckp wire, what i would do personally is just mount the box somewhere easy to reach, and make something to turn the screw, sort of like a dial\radio knob sorta thing so it's easier to set in a hurry, and you won't have to hunt for a little screwdriver. mount the box on the front of the dash or something, or if you attached it to the backside of the dash but had a knob sticking out, you could make it look almost factory.

Personaly, with the zex kit I would just run the 87 tune and use the nitrous when you want. The difference between the 87 and 91 tune is not that great to see spending all the time and money for that option ( for me anyway ). Get a set of 3:92 or 4:10 gears and colder plugs and use the juice when you feel the need to run someone. I would rather walk someone by a mile anyday!
Just my 2 cents!

the timing twister is not available for 08s for some reason, but im not sure how it differs from the regular hemi retard control.msd describes them both the same.that is a good idea about the knob,as long as it doesnt get bumped.[thats probably why it requires a screwdriver]it just seems like the best way would be a switch to toggle between two preset timing degrees.it seems like it would be easy to do,but aparently not.i guess im asking too much.its just that id hate to loose by a fender on 87 tune, when 93 would have made the difference.sure,i could spray, have you priced n2o latley?i dont want to use it unless i have too lol. burnout

Exactly my point I have found no noticable difference between the 87 & 91 tune on my truck anyway....a retard box wouldn't be worth the xtra $$$$ IMO. My NO2 is always just a flip of a switch away....!!!!!!

if he wants to run a timing retard unit, that's his choice. some people think it's a waste of money to buy a timing twister, some think it's a waste of money to put flames all over your paint, some think it's a waste of money to put a big stereo in, etc. it's all a matter of personal preference.

For what it's worth Joe, unfortunately Ma Mopar is pretty tight when it comes to sharing it's technology with the aftermarket world, unlike Ford & GM.

i never said anyone was telling anybody to do anything. his original question was "can i wire a switch in line with the retarder so i can keep it set for n2o and flip it on with the n2o when i need it?" i don't think reading posts from people saying that they wouldn't buy one really answers that, do you?

OK, to answer his original question. Yes you could probably do this but it wold be very expensive and could lead to other problems. If the Hemi ever gets a "flip Switch " like I have in my stang it would be very simple. You could probably wire somthing up to work but I would personaly weigh the " COST to " BOOM " factor of using a system that is not specificly designed for that purpose.
I use my juice sparingly and flip the switch at WOT if it looks like someone is gonna kill me stock. I don't even bother with most cars anymore since so many have such a great weight to HP advantage. Chebys and Tincans, Tundras are a different story!

Good luck and if you find a safe and usefull alternative please let us know.

Do ya also use the 87 gas with the 87 tune.
Do any bottled additives really make a difference?
Do you feel that the window switch works better than a manual switch.
Just a little question from an old fart. burnout
