Hello all! New here..I'll post up a "I'm new here" post with some pics soon. However, I have a question that's bothering me. I'm looking to replace the CD/Cassette factory unit I have now with the Infinty system in my '05 QC. What I'm seeing on Crutchfield is the requirement of a $160 harness. WHAT?!?!?! It also comes with a little box. I have to assume this box feeds the factory amp, which I do not plan on using. I'm confused why I need such an expensive harness. What is it offering? I'm not sure why I can't run new speaker wire (external amp some other day) to the new HU and then run a contact 12V (if needed) and run the remote wire off the cig lighter that is right next to the radio. I would assume the rest of the needed wiring (illumination, ect) would be in a typical $40 harness found at Wal-Mart. What am I missing? Any and all input is much appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to HTC.

You aren't missing anything. You can do exactly what you said. Don't expect it to sound fantastic, though. The infinity speakers aren't all that.

Yeah, I'm with ya. I plan on replacing the speakers, too. This harness has me baffled, though...whatis it doing that's special to make it $160??! I won't whine too much about a $40 harness, but $160!?!? Holy smokes. As long as there is a constant 12V, switched 12V and illumiation..I'm set...or am I missing something?

i think it's the way the stock head unit communicates with the amp, I'm not 100% sure but i think it's a Bus protocol not a simple high or low level outputs, and when replacing the stock head unit and keeping the factory amp the level outputs from the aftermarket head unit have to be encoded to Bus to be accepted by the amp, the encoder module it's not cheep it's like a small processor

That does make sense. WHat if you're not using the factory amp? THen what harness is needed?

Has anyone installed an aftermarket HU and NOT used this $160 harness?

Oh, and thanks for all the welcomes! I've now posted in the new section..hehe

ME! I see you already posted about this. I PMed you back. I used the basic harness in my 03 with the Infinity. Sounded WAY better than stock. I guess it bypassed the amp though? Any input appreciated. But, okay, now if you have the steering wheel controls, do you lose them? I would just buy the basic harness and bypass the amp if I keep my steering wheel controls. That would be great.

Got your PM! Some of the aftermarket HU will have a remove hardwire port on the back. A PAC box can allow you to retain the steering wheel controls by using this port. If the HU doesn't have this port the PAC box will have an IR emitter you install in the interior somewhere so when you hit the steering wheel control, it emits an IR signal to the HU. I like the hardwire approach myself. I know some Kenwood Excel. and Pioneer Pre. have this remote hardwire port..

I think you answered my question, though. THere IS a basic harness that can be used. THat's the ticket for me, I do believe!

If you are not using the factory amp you can bypass everything and run the speaker wires to the stock amp output plug and there you have all the speaker wires but the access it's a bitch.
Most aftermarket head units (like mine) have the wire for the steering wheel remote module

Well, I'm not opposed to running new speaker wire to all the speakers. However, my concern is whether or not I'll be able to use any kind of harness to simplify things or will I have to run ALL new wire (remote, 12V, ground, Illum, ect)?

All those wires are already there, just tap them. The stock infinity stereo has actual diagrams and color codes for the wires and what they do. Its as easy as buying a deck, taking out the old head unit, taping some wires, run new wires to the speakers (cheat a little and use part of the stock stuff where possible to save head aches) and then rant about how horrible the stock speakers are and go buy new ones Big Grin
